What component is this?

Howdy folks,

I've got a '78 240d I've been having a blast driving around & catching up on routine maintenance.

Today I went to check oil level before a drive & noticed a wire connected to something on the thermostat housing was disconnected completely.

There was no connector on the end, just black housing, couldn't tell if there was electrical wire inside or not, I tucked it back into the black rubber connector on the therm housing but clearly this wire or whatever it is isn't doing anything.

What is this part? What should be happening here?

Thanks,

MEK

I know it looks like a coolant temp sensor but....my temp gauge works 100% so this must be for something else. Haven't turned it up in any parts listings yet.

Since gauge works while it is disconnected I'm thinking it is temp sensor for glow plug circuit.

If that is an AC car I think it is for the electric fan. The engine temp sensor for the gauge is in the head near the glow plugs. IIRC it is the most rearward one if there are more than one.

It is in indeed an AC car but it is NOT functional at this point. So I guess no worries then?

thanks,

Mek

If the dash temp gauge works it is ok. It could be tested easily, use an ohmmeter on the switch cold then test it hot. My guess is it will open in one condition and closed on the other. Open when cold and closed when hot is my guess.

On my 300d that sensor delays the activation of ACC on a cold day so you don’t get an ice cold blast of air in your face on startup. Perhaps the 240 has a similar system. Odd because they have fully manual water valves. Maybe it’s for something sense on the 240.

The gauge coolant temp sensor is normally about in the middle of the cylinder head on the left side.
