1976 300D Oil Capacity
I am trying to find out the correct oil capacity,
the owners manual states 5.5L which converts to 5.81 quarts, but online i have read that the om617 takes up to 8quarts. ![]() my intake has the number 617.141 Thanks, i appreciate the help

I was looking more for a specific amount of quarts.

5.81qt to 8qt are the range. You cannot FULLY drain the engine oil. I would suggest you to put 5.5 qt in, run the car for a little while and top it up. As the other member mention, fill it until it hits the mark.

I used to put 7 quarts in my 1976 300D, that put the level right at the full mark. I also took loose the lower oil cooler hose, to get the 3/4 of a quart out of the cooler at every oil and filter change.

Ah ok, i wasnt aware that that much oil would be retained in the motor still.
As far as the filters go, does anyone pre-fill the housing before putting it on?

nah no reason to pre-fill the canister, that would be messy.
Clean the plastic pre-filter screen with diesel fuel, dry it out and then re-install it.
