Vacuum Pumps:
Greetings,
I have a 617.950 with the early vacuum pump. The later, 617.951 style pumps seem to hold up better, as they have a plunger instead of a diaphragm. Can the later style pump be swapped directly onto the early engine????

check some parts suppliers for applications of the IP timing gear. If they are the same you should be golden.
The timing gear was changed in that period to provide a greater timing advance. I have an old style VP on the shelf I can measure if someone else can measure the cam plate. If the cam rise is different, you can swap the plates with a later version that matches the later VP. |

Hmmmm.....
The eccentric in my Dad's 617.951 looks similar to my 617.950, other than the later motor doesn't have the hollow bolt for oiling....Robert

I have used an "early' diaphragm type pump on a later engine, (616s) no problem. You must swap the air cleaner top also.

The early VP is allot cheaper and easier to rebuild plus the
"super super tiny supercharger' effect

I think the later, plunger style pump is more reliable....

They've gone up since I last looked. The kit with the new bearing and arm is,nt cheap either but might be the best route.

Because?
I think the diaphragm type might be a simpler design. Either way those little in line fuel filters in the vacuum lines might be the best "early warning" system to catch a problem with the system. A least they make me feel better.

I haven't seen as many of the late-style pumps go bad as the early versions....

It would be interesting, I think as far as which is a better pump, theres not much chit chat, both seem to be pretty good pumps. Theres a "later" one that can (more than the 616/7) barfs its bearings and toasts your engine. Both my cars now have the "Later" 616/7 pumps.

Holy chit that's a lot of dough! ![]() Anyone use a 12V vaccum pump instead? Diesel RV's use them for the air brakes. They're about $150.
