Replaced my starter, w123

Well at 300,650 miles on the odometer, the starter gets replaced. It's been acting up for the last 5-10k miles, but it was still working more than 50% of the time. They just don't make things this well anymore... getting 300k out of a starter is a thing of the past.

What a PITA to get that top allen bolt out!

Don't drop it on your foot either. You smash you foot into a million pieces. I weighed a 616 starter once, it weighed 25lbs.

That's the truth !

My starter was working fine but I recently pulled it to open it up and check the brushes etc. Had a good challenge getting both bolts out. Corrosion seemed to be the problem.
My starter's internals look good so I'll just lube the bushings, paint it and put it back on...with plenty of anti-seize on the bolt threads !

I've always used several long 1/2" drive extensions, two impact universals, and an impact wrench... on a lift...

If you can get to it from the top, a great trick I learned was to cut an allen down to about an inch, insert it into the bolt, and then use the same size ratchet wrench to turn. There was no clearance for me to use an allen socket.

Basically the same, but 3/8" drive with long handled flex head ratchet because I don't my compressor set up here yet.

Enough extensions to access it from the back of the transmission, a universal joint and a breaker bar. Putting the right front and rear upon on jackstands makes it easier.
