I also bought a used 190D Haynes manual from eBay for $10 which is invaluable. I only bought the gas version as it is very similar except the engine. I asked questions on the diesel engine here. Alternately you can buy the diesel version but they are normally shipped from UK and is more expensive. I checked out all the electrical issues using the manual.

BTW: If your vacuum pump pulled vacuum and held it then it should be OK. I would not remove it.

You need to buy a deep 27mm, at least 3 inches deep to remove the injectors. I think the special Mercedes socket comes with 2 openings in the middle to make allowance for the hose barb. Do not break those !!

I did buy a deep well socket, but the groves in the socket are not deep enough. I am trying to find a good manual. Thanks for the help. Yes I am working full time on this car, well allmost. I have been layed off for about three weeks and I have to do something.

This link has some info on the socket. A deep 1 1/16 socket would do also. I have the same car. If you need any pictures taken on the car then just PM me and I will try my best. I am not good with engine or tranny.

Ok finally got a 27mm socket deep enough, got injector #1 out and the compression tester fitting does not fit. Now what? While I have the injectors out should I take them apart and clean them?

Unless you have the equipment to pressure balance them, leave them alone.

have them tested by a shop and rebuilt if needed.

You need to use the glowplug holes on these engines for compression testing

I need to get a diesel compression tester, the one I had was for a gass motor.

Did some other stuff today, the blower motor was squeeking really bad. Took blower motor out cleaned it up, still had brushes in it, lubed it up and no more squeeking. Also found a loose vacuum hose, put it back together and now she turns off with the key. Forgot to tell you guys I have alot of white smoke coming out tailpipe, what does that mean?

Have another question, I tryed to check timing chain stretch but I cant see the numbers. How do you read the numbers? There is too much stuff in the way. I also read that if chain jumps a grove, that might cause the car to idle bad. How does a chain jump a grove?

Can I use a wire brush on the tips of the injector to clean them up?

find out what it is. Put a piece of cold metal in the smoke to see if any water condenses on it.

give it a smell - you should be able to come to a rational conclusion

yes, but use brass.

it isn't going to help that much except in seating them. - unless there is a very large amount accumulated.

there is one angle where you can get a decent shot at the pointer.

clean off the crank balancer really well before trying to read those numbers



chains will not jump any teeth on their own without a very traumatic incident. They can be installed improperly while someone is messing around....

ps... you should really try to start searching for your answers on other threads. This type of posting on a continuous thread confuses people and they lose interest.

I might be the only one paying attention. And, trust me, its not very helpful if I am the only one answering your questions.

Try posting questions on threads that are related to your question.


Its very difficult on this forum to find threads related to the 4 cylinder OM601 190D. Try searching for topics related to OM603 and 300SDL

this arrangement is much more popular and there is plenty of information regarding it. The OM603 almost identical in many ways.

TDC is when valve cover off and marks line up with both lifters up on #1 cylinder?
