1984 190D 2.2
Thinking about buying a 1984 190D 2.2 but the guy said there is oil coming out the tailpipe. What is wrong with it? He wants $500.00 for it, it has alot of new parts. What do you guys think?

Determine if it is indeed oil. If that is the case, prepare to pull the engine. I have a similar case in my driveway. Pulled the engine, pistons were toast, and cylinder walls accordingly. Got a replacement engine for 450 - less than the cost of the pistons.

Never know until you open it up - could be rings, could be a lot of things. Check the compression and post back here.

Could be a failed head gasket in the area where the oil goes up to the head. That cylinder should spray oil out with the injector removed and cranked. Although it would be wise to not count on anything other than having to replace the engine to be safe.

601 head gasket failure
As barry said, more likely headgasket failure.
The 601 engine headgasket failure occurs most often near the front oil passage near piston 1, and trickles or dumps oil into piston 1. |
So if it is the headgasket, this is a good deal? The car has rebuilt tranny, no rust, new radiator, new ball joints, new glow plugs, new battery, new sunroof, new shocks.
|
With a new radiator I might wonder if it had been overheated in the recent past. Overheating seems to be hard on a lot of gaskets throughout the engine. Ask me how I know. I concur on the h.g. when my hg went south, the car ran rough and noticeably smoked blue black. As noted, it was the gasket between the first piston the the chain galley that failed. I was able to replace the gasket myself. Not that hard if youre patient.

You cannot be sure it is the headgasket. It is only a good possibility. Removing the number one injector and checking for oil spray would verify the diagnosis about 90 percent of the time.
The owner may let you do this before purchase. Although you would have to be very careful how you arranged it. If he felt it was just a head gasket he might not sell it. Or boost the price. Again if you are mentally prepared to find another engine there is a comfort zone in this deal or offer less. Being comforatable going in is important to future enjoyment of the car in my opinion. Generally a head gasket change is a managable do it yourself item. |
Well got the trailer ready and was told to meet him at 4:00, get a call from the seller at 2:30 and he says that he is not sure he wants to sell. He is going to call me tonight, he said if he sells it he will call me. So now I wait, can you believe that?

Any chance he follows this site?

Got the phone call, back on for Thursday.

If it's only a head gasket, I'd buy it for only $500.
