K&N filter

Since diesels suck so much air would a K&N filter be a good idea? I question whether they filter good enough. Thanks

I believe the general consensus of the fellows on here is that K&N+diesel=bad.

I believe the K&N's dont filter well enough. Stick with the OEM filters.

K&N filters don't filter very well. There is also little benefit in trying to reduce the intake restriction by messing with air filters. I remember a test done by one of the hot rod/muscle car mags in which they tried to flow test air filters. They had to cut them in half to even get a restriction reading on the flowbench. As long as it isn't clogged, the stock filter has basically no restriction.

Short version: Avoid K&N.

A clean paper filter works better than a clean K&N, but a dirty paper filters works worse than a dirty K&N. Buy paper, change before it gets too dirty.

Uh oh, another K&N thread. Do a search on this topic, you'll be sure to find TONS of info/opinions.

I like my K+N,however I made a foam prefilter (oiled) to catch most of the dust.

Completely pointless. Why not just use a normal filter that actually keeps the air going into the motor clean?

One thing that is NOT an opinion is that the stock setup flows more air than a stock engine will need.

I have a Federal 84 300D and have a K&N Air Filter that fits the Stock Filter Housing; not the Cone shaped K&N with the so called Performance Intake.
At the bottom is a thread that I started for a different reason but started a lively decussion on the K&N Air Filters.

I bought the K&N due to the fact that the Stock Air Filter was getting partly contaminated with the Oil From the Blow By and to save money.
In 2 years I have cleaned the K&N 2 times. Both times I felt the area behind the Filter before it goes into the intake. Both times I have felt nothing gritty that would indicate that anything is getting past the Air Filter.

Since the inside of the Air Filter Housing has a film of Oil on it I believe that if any dust was getting past the filter in a years time some of that dust ought to stick to the Oil; but I have found none.

I also have read some of the articles on the internet concerning the K&N Filters and it appears that some of them do not seal well in the stock Air Filter Housings of some Vehicles (some Ford Pickups in the article I read); so if they do not seal well they do not filter well.

When I got my K&N Air Filter I noted that the Rubber sealing area on the filter was stiff compared to the Fram Filter it came with. Before, I installed the filter I put a bead of Silicone Sealant on the sealing edge of the filter. So on mine all the Air goes though the Filter Element.

Also in Long Beach CA it is dusty; partly due to the Heavy Truck traffic on the Freeway not ever 1/4 of a mile from me where the Trucks are headed for the Port of Long Beach.

The thing is that no one has actually tested the actual K&N Air Filter/s that are made for Mercedes.
The other issue is that it is claimed the K&N Air Filters ruin the MAP sensors on Gas Cars.

Grit you can FEEL is not what you should be concerned about. It is the extremely small silicon and dust particles in the air that flow right through that K&N and into the engine that cause the wear. The paper filter is better in every way.

I've got a K&N cone filter sitting in my carport. I installed it on my 300sdl and the sound that it produced would certainly please a teenager. I noticed no difference in mileage or performance. I went back to the stock air filter. The K&N filters allowed a lot of sound to eminate from the intake. I'm running a straight exhaust pipe to a turbo muffler, a bit louder than stock, but the sound of the K&N filter was too much.

Hold a K&N up to the light. You'll notice lots of little pinholes. Now do the same thing with an OE quality paper filter

Because of its larger surface area an OE quality paper filter flows more air then a K&N.
