Need help pulling the cylinder head 300D
I've decided to pull the head on the 93 300D, by gawd Ima gonna find that chuffing and clacking. I found a site that looks good for valve adjustments which I'm going to do first. Any good links would be helpful

Please wait...
If I were you, I'd hold on a minute. In another post you have on this same issue, it was requested that you post a video of the sound you are experiencing so that some of the more knowledgeable members of the board could help you to diagnose the sound you're hearing. Have you done that yet? Pulling the head to diagnose a sound the cause of which you remain uncertain seems to me to be a bit hasty, and a good way to make a running and driving car into a parts car, should you end up not having the ability to put everything back together again. I am in no way trying to discount your mechanical abilities, I just wouldn't want a running car that you presumably paid a "running car price" for to end up listed as a parts car on craigslist for $500 with "the head is in the trunk" somewhere in the ad, if you know what I mean...
Also, a 1993 300D would have hydraulic valves that are not adjustable in the same manner as the OM617 motors. But perhaps you meant something else?

I didn't think it had hyd lifters if it was an overhead cam. that would explain the noise because that's exactly what it sounds like, when the rpm and oil pressure is up the noise fades and then goes away and returns when you let off the throttle. got any pics?

Why not test the lifters. A drill press and a pan of oil. Any lifter that depressed really faster than any other is suspect. Make sure each good lifter is returned to the same lifter bore. Costs nothing and takes little time as you already have the cam off obviously.

I'm pretty sure MB recommends against using a magnet to pick up the lifters.

I don't think so. Pretty safe and standard way to pull those little pieces. I would doubt if it's against the rules.

Cam follower/lifter noise at idle could be the head gasket passing pressurized oil to the timing chain area. Failures happen at the right front.

There is no valves to adjust on the OM60x.
Why you need to pull the head? Just because of lifter noises? That is a bit drastic. Ask some oil experts. They claim different oil or synthetic would help.
