Question 1995 E300D 124 front end vibration

OK, so this just started suddenly a few days ago, I haven't done any work on the car previous. It had new front tires a few months ago, quality Continental tires from a trusted local dealer.

At anywhere from 20-45mph I get significant front end vibration when hitting any sort of rolling bumps. It typically only lasts about 5-10 seconds sometimes a little longer. It doesnt happen when I hit a small pothole, only when hitting bumps where both struts are moving in opposite directions at the same time. At highway speeds its fine hitting any type of bumps.

I was planning on replacing the front struts anyways, they are due and are probably original at almost 170K miles (the rear ones were I did those a few months ago)

How do I check that its not something else before I replace the struts? I'd like to do anything necessary at the same time and then get an alignment done.
