hot wire 1979 300sd
I am going to be looking at a 1979 300sd for a motor transplant . The Lady has lost the keys from her deceased husband. Is there a way to hot wire it to get it running without going through the hassle to get the proper keys? I can do it on an old chevy just unsure how it works with the glow plugs and then the starter. The body is rough but she said it ran good a year ago?

I know you can jump the starter with a good screw driver... or there's another way with a jumper i dont know how to do, the problem is cycling the glow plugs etc.

You will have to pull the brown line going to the fuel shut off on the rear of the injection pump.
Pull the cover off the glow plug relay, and pull the plug that contains the 5 wires going to the GP`s. Make a jumper wire to fit into each on the 5 holes of the plug. IE 5 seperate wires, then twist them together with a wire going to a 12v source. Battery or to the large wire in the GP relay with the 8 or 10mm nut holding it. Warm the plugs, jump the starter and Vroooom. Now with out the keys, you won`t be able to drive the car with the steering wheel locked. Unless you like to go around in a circle. Take the registration and drivers license to the dealer for a new key. they will need the Vin#. may have to take the lady with you, since she owns the car. Charlie

Maybe you could get some advise from one of the local undesirables. I am sure they could get it going in less that 1/2 a minute.
![]() If its got the old slow wire GP's you only need to connect 12v to the wire to the back GP for a minute or so. Then the screw driver on the starter. The shut off vac line to the IP will need to be removed before you start.

Just as an update!. My son purchased the car for $300 he wants it for a diesel motor swap into his Toyota. The body is pretty rusty but the trim and bumpers are in good shape. We got it home and tried to start it with a not very healthy battery. By passed the "No Key" with a piece of 12 gauge wire to the starting circuit under the battery mount and wiring 5 different leads to the relay box and removed the plug as was suggested . attached it to the battery and let her rip..turn over and has a little rumble and then nothing ...hummm?
I also notice I didnt get a spark when I hooked up the glow plug bypass to the battery terminal??? So I pull the glow plug and test it on the multimeter for continuity..and nothing....I pull them all and nothing... So we Run to auto parts and get the 5 bosch pencil plugs install them ....and after over a year off it takes maybe 4 turns and it flashes to life.... smoothed out with in a minute or 2 and because I was running it on a pop bottle from the IP we shut it off...but was surprised and delighted it ran that good. Now to adjust the Valves!!!.... SO thanks to all of those who gave advise I am sure we will be back for other ideas of problem solving!! |

Nice! I was just going to suggest going to the dealer and having a key VIN matched.
I've always wanted to hot wire my car. Judging from the wiring it looks stupid easy and since I have the key there isn't a need to fight the steering wheel lock. I think one can attain MB coolness by push starting his car.

Ohhh Goody!!!!......"Peachparts Hot wire King" !!.....:-)
Yes, I have to admit it is pretty easy to hot wire but ...you had better have a long straight road with the steering locked...:-) Now the fun begins trying to figure out how to convert the vacume shut off with the toyota key... I figure I will just use a push button with a relay for glowing Use the stock toyota starter just have the flywheel to get organized Temp gauge....Mercedes to Toyota.. Oh my mind spins :-)...but be a great Father /Son project and even daughters are looking into see how it works!!! |

An actuator, power to close would work for the shut off.

Being a 79, I don`t think you will have the EGR manifolds, good
.there a few forum members that have done swaps into other vehicles. "CELL" did one in a older Chevy Pick-Up. "DEALWITHIT" did a swap into a Mazda PU. Do a search on their name to locate the threads, and their challenges. I found this one in my notes, 53 ford PU. about pg 3 is a 66 Chevy PU, in teresting. 617 powered 53 F100 Charlie
