Removing intake crossover on 603...
I just removed the crossover pipe and cleaned the gunk out - it was packed with soot and oil. While cleaning the pipes I tried not to get any debris to drop down to the turbo area below - I used the vacuum suction to pull the junk out as I was scraping it out but I still think some small stuff had falled down into the pipe below...
I'm wonering if I can start the engine without the crossover pipe in place - hopeing to blow out whatever is down in there now so it doesn't make its way to the intake.... Ultimate goal is to remove the intake manifold as well - wondering if I could even start the engine without the intake manifold in place?! It would seem ok, but wanted to check....

No,You Can't!
Because you're gonna go ahead and pull the Intake
(Which is just as full of all that same Goo/Gunk) and Clean it Too! [If you've got the Crossover Completely OFF,starting the engine will effectively "Blow Out" whatever little trash fell into the Turbo Output from your little scraping expedition. You might block any debris from being "Cast Across" the Crossover Void into the intakes. ] That OM603 will start with no turbo or intake. Howeveah ,remember it'll also suck in ANYTHING in the vicinity of the Intakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote:
1) Start the engine now, with only the crossover pipe removed - which hopefully will blow out whatever little particles fell into the turbo (guess I'll need to rev it up to get the turbo spinning to kick all that out) - all while protecting the intake across the way to ensure that nothing is blown into it... OR 2) Go ahead and remove the intake manifold as well, being careful to scrape off whatever remains of the intake gasket there are or whatever else... make sure nothing is near the intake openings and THEN start the engine...

I have considered next time I pull the cross pipe and intake, taking both pieces to the parts store and having them hot tanked.

Option # 1
Mercfan,
I like #1 ,Because the Individual Intakes have the protection of the I.M. (If y'all went with option #2 ALL of the E.C.[Engine Compartment] would have to have had the O.C.D. Surgical Clean first.] Wodnek, YES! (Make sure whatever chemicals they've got in the Tank don't DISSOLVE the I.M. and Crossover) [Clean and Shiny, not "Holy"] All that Black Tarry Goo gets into the ALDA system Too.
