flashers not flashing
I'm pretty sure I need a new hazard button, but just checking in...
My hazards flash just fine, but my turning signals are starting to stick. They will flash two or three times, then stay on. I have a 1980 300sd. I replaced the fuse but no change. I haven't changed the bulbs... If I slightly depress the hazard button, the flashers will start flashing again. Also, if I jiggle the cord going to the flasher unit under the dash, the flashers will unstick for a few clicks. I took the hazard out, tried to clean it, but could not get it open. After I reinstalled it, the flashers worked well for a few turns, then started being balky again. I am pretty sure that's what I need to do, get a new hazard, but since they're fairly pricey, I thought I'd check in! Do we think it's the flasher unit under the dash, or the hazard? I would do a test with an electric meter, but as i am a truly stupid girl, there is no way I can figure out how to do that.

You are correct that the emergency flasher unit is directly related to
the turn signals flashing. I have never took one apart either, so don't know if it is possible. But your fiddling with it and getting it to work a little better sounds like it to me. Hopefully someone else here has more detail. You should be able to get a used one very reasonably.

The problem will be in the either the hazaerd switch or the relay.
On my car, the problem is in the hazard switch itself. I noticed that the turn signal indicaters in the dash dimmed a bit, then no flashers, when I messed with the hazard switch they will start working again, and the brightness was better.

The problem may very well be dirty contacts in the hazard switch. It can be taken apart and cleaned, just be careful to not lose any of the little springs and balls inside. Operate on an old towel to keep pieces from bouncing onto the floor. Usually the brass contacts corrode from age or coffee spills.
The flasher unit itself is AFAIK not repairable -- it is transistorized. If yours is part number 000 821 09 63 or 000 821 10 63 then I have a spare for sale in the parts section of this forum. You can PM me if cleaning the switch doesn't help. The fact that your flasher works at all, even for just a few flashes, suggests that it's not the flasher so do the switch first. Jeremy

Coffee spills... THAT's ringing a bell...
I got the hazard open and cleaned it as well as I could. I'll drive this afternoon and see if that did anything.

Yes, those little springs are tough to find in a short shag carpet. At least that is what I heard
