MB parts are more expensive than VW parts, which are more expensive Chevy parts. Each car's original price reflects that.

Makes perfect sense to me. The only fault I have commonly heard of is rust, and that's mostly on the early series cars.

It was Consumer Guide, I believe, that picked the 300e as the overall cheapest car to run (I am assuming in its size range) back in the late 1980s. They took into account resale value as a big part of that.

The guy who ran the local indy shop at the time banged on about that for years afterwards : Ze German engineering ist cheeper in zee long run etc....

I've always toyed with the idea of getting a W124 gasser, but have heard that they are gross polluters and will break you when you try to pass smog. I'm sure some states are tougher than others.

yeah, they said something like, "the diesel versions are slow enough to cause brain damage..."
they go on to hype them as perfect apocalypse vehicles...

Gross polluter is kind of a harsh label to slap on all W124 series. Mine all pass state smog tests. Anything that's not maintained will fail, regardless of who made it.

I can attest that my 90 300e with 230K on it with the original catalyst passed both California and Georgia 2 speed dyno emissions testing everytime (except once for the gas cap) with flying colors. I was actually blown away at how low the HC's and NOx were last test (a few month ago). I think the reason these cars get a bad wrap is that people don't adjust the EHA's when replacing them or have somebody that doesn't know what they are doing tinker with the MAF adjustment screw. That and not replacing caps, rotors, or O2 sensors when needed.

As for slow enough to cause brain damage, clearly they have not driven an 87 with the ALDA tweeked.

So if a W124 300D is slow enough to cause brain damage, what does that mean for a W123 240D?

I am convinced my old 240 helped slow down the earth's rotation. Just saying.
