Wonky Tach Amp!

So, years ago when I purchased my '82 300 SD, the tach amp did not work so I removed amp, did the spacer trick, screw amp back in and it worked for several months and then died. Fast forward four years, I purchased an amp off EBay that worked perfectly for a day and then had bouncing needle syndrome though tach always worked, very stable at idle. Last week, I was at a PicknPull and found an amp and installed and voila, it worked perfectly with no needle bounce! Two days later, died completely! Any theories after reading the above?

The spacer trick is just a band-aid. You can buy all sorts of "stuff" on ebay. The local P'N'P unit is just as old as yours.
Just a suggestion, contact Techguy512 here on the forum.

Un-bolt the base, slip the tachometer sensor wire out.
Look at the plastic around the pins, if it is crumbling = replace the sensor.

The end circled is at the end of the amp, in the bottom of the socket.

Yeah, here are a couple of pics. The end with three female sockets fits into the bottom of the plug bolted to the inner fender.

I placed a 3/4" OD 1/8" thick nylon washer on top the potting and now the tach works correctly.

Guess I need a new amp.....Robert

I went through a series of "band aid" solutions here too like folded pieces of mech-towels, which worked for about a month each, then I went on to cut round pieces of thin laminating plastic, which also lasted for about a month, then I thought that rubber might work better... as soon as I screwed on the top I heard this crunching noise and I knew that I had just killed the amp, so I went to my PNP and got another one, which worked for a couple of days. Then it started to go intermittent too (sigh). I patiently folded a piece of mech-towel and it's been working good ever since. Now I know what to do when that stops working... Good post.
