IIRC, the Metric Motors long block come with the IP installed as well.

So what are the Alternatives for company rebuilts?

I know two companies... but no first hand experience with them.

-Adsitco -- The forum's favorite company! gag

-Remanufactured.com

http://www.remanufactured.com/Mercedes_Engines.htm

They have long blocks (don't know if includes the IP) for $3,990.00.
I've wondered what's their reputation?

So are there any other companies out there?

The Metrics DO come with an IP, head and all the usual long block items.

No turbo though. It would only make sense to splurge and get a $900 rebuilt turbo with a new engine.

....

OK, I have been swayed off the Metric idea for sure. On to the used engine adventure! Ill go for anything sub 200k that looks good. Already mated to a good running transmission a major plus, but not necessary.

Ill probably wait a year to do this anyways - its not an emergency and I dont have proper facilities. Come September I am in grad school again, during which I have barely enough time to do basic living activities...

There's no right answer to this one, only the right answer for you and your circumstances. My opinion is put a new MB long engine in it and replace the ancillaries while you're at it but the value of the car to me far exceeds "book value" so I don't care. If I felt differently about the car I would absolutely go to the PNP and grab a used ending for $350 and roll the dice and not look back.

One thing though, you know the odometers start slipping so who knows what the mileage really is on a used engine.

Bottom line: This is a question only you can answer.

I agree with the above, but from what I know of you, I'd go with a used engine

1. You've got 2 spare cars, so tex can be incapacitated at least briefly.
2. You've got the tools and know-how (or at least resources) for any engine trouble you might run into.
3. You're paying for someone else's labor by buying Metric, which considering how much we work on these cars ourselves, we're not used to paying for that.

And I don't know what you plan to do with other motor. It'd be cool to rebuild it and swap it back after, or the other way around (buy a used engine, rebuild, swap in). That is, however, also expensive (a fraction of Metric, though) and time-consuming (probably the problem here).

I bet if you exercise proper diligence when shopping, you can score a rusty car with a good engine and possibly make your purchase back by selling stray parts and junking the body (Holland Used Auto Parts in Billerica picked up mine for free). Let me know what you plan on doing.

OK, OK, the Metric comes with an IP. I was trying to picture the motor as I've seen it in pictures. I guess the one I was visualizing wasn't a Metric.

My apologies to Metric.

You just want me to have another parts car It was a little bit too much fun taking the parts off the rustbucket 240D I had in the yard for awhile...

OK, let the search begin. If anyone sees an engine or donor car that looks promising, please do let me know.

Im ready for some automotive luck.

After enough trial and error I decided to buy a whole new/used car, instead of doing the resurrection deal time and time again.

Way too costly with the downtime and all the related parts/components that will fail after the install/rebuild is done.

Been there - done that.

Haha, yeah, except if I bring any more parts home my mum's gonna have my head on a pike. And it's not all fun, it's hard to forget that you're putting an MB to rest--don't forget to keep a token for remembrance.

Metric is not the only quality engine rebuilder in the country. If I were in Boston and considering spending that kind of money, I'd take a couple days to drive the car to Orlando, leave the car with Noel's, and fly back. Then do the reverse in a few weeks after it is done.

Find an independent mechanic who rebuilds engines and get a price from them on rebuilding your old engine. Tell them what your want done (new pistons, sleeves, bearings, gaskets & seals, timing chain & guides, and valves & guides). I guarantee they will be cheaper than Metric Motors. Sounds like Metric Motors does a lot more than needs to be done, basically a new instead of rebuilt engine.

I also do not understand the religious observance of 'The Great Metric Motors' on this forum.

these are not rare cars by any stretch.

plenty of machine shops have experience with these engines and MB in general. There's nothing 'special' about them.

My SD with 240+ on it runs like a top. Others I've seen with similar mileage run just as well. There is almost no reason to spend 4k for a reman engine that needs installation when there are plenty of cars sitting around with great engines waiting to be swapped over. Find a running used engine & spend the savings on repairing the rest of the car.
