It sounds like you are talking about the belly pan. If so, I have never seen a metal one. If it is a factory part, don't take it off and throw it away. They serve an important purpose.

They were mostly on..
4 matic (all wheel drive) models sold in locations outside Europe and North America. They turn up on flea-bay from time to time.

It's in EPC; similar to the "crash guard" sold for the W123 cars. I've never seen one but they do exist and Sean makes a good point, the 4-Matics and cars intended for third-world road conditions are most likely where they'd be installed. Probably rare in this country and potentially valuable.

Hmmm. I could swear that the belly pan under my '88 300E is metal. It's different than the pan under my '95 E300D, which is plastic, in that one can change the oil without removing that metal pan, whereas with the diesel there are 2 plastic belly pans and you have to remove the front one to change the oil. And the back one to change the trans fluid.

My '95 didn't have the belly pan on it when I bought it. Anyone ever replace these and know an approximate cost?

When the 124 came out, the Engineers that I was working with at Mercedes told me that they were important for maintaining proper engine bay temperatures, reducing drag, and on the diesel for noise reduction.
