Engine runs wide open

I have a 1985 300SD W126 engine 617.951. Calif. version I believe, because of the vacuum diagram I found online.
Engine runs wide open when started and dash switch will not shut it off. I have to pull fuel line off to shut it down!
I had injection pump recently "look at" by a diesel specialty shop due to earlier problems of engine stalling.
Could I have done something wrong with reinstalling the pump?
Vacuum lines are ok now because of diagrams I found online.
How about fuel lines switched or something simple?
Grasping at straws now..

Check your linkages and make sure it's not binding into anything and caused it to get stuck at a depressed position...you must have leaned on to it while you're working on the vacuum lines...

You probably did not re-install the shut off valve correctly. If it is not hooked to the rack, the engine will run away. Lots of threads on the topic.

Something is not right with your vacuum or it would be shutting off with the key. Could be the shut off valve.

Will the car shut off by depressing the stop lever on the throttle linkage (under the hood)? If not it could be a throttle linkage adjustment problem.

Is the linkage on the back of the pump, at the "stop" (IE: wide open)? Or is it down where it should be (for idle speed)?

Worry about the vacuum later... You need to get the "wide open" problem sorted out first. It sounds like you may need to unhook all of the throttle linkage and work from to pump towards the valve cover to find the problem.

It is possible that the pump itself could be malfunctioning too. But, not enough information at this point....

It's either bent up linkages or a backward shutoff.

I agree with Kerry.
If it is not connected to the Rack properly no amout of Vacuum will work.

If the shutoff valve is hooked up properly, it's also possible that the idle adjusting screw is turned in too far for the spring loaded pin to have enough travel, thereby not allowing the linkage to fully shutdown the rack in the IP.

If the throttle cable is not adjusted correctly it will run away like that. I scared myself while "fiddeling" with adjustments under the hood. I tightened up the throttle cable a little bit and it shot up to full tick. Sounds like you could have two problems, the shutoff and throttle linkage.

I'm no expert on these so diregard anything I say.

Get back in touch with the Injection-Shop, ask them specifically whether they removed the vac.stop device, and did they re-fit it correctly an test it afterwards!

Sonds to me it wasnt fitted back right, and nothing much you can do to stop engine in this condition, bar CO2 extinguisher down the inlet or cut the fuel line...

Just an idea about the wide-open situation ... this is based on my 616.912 so it may not apply. There should be a spring on the back of the IP from the side of the pump to the throttle linkage lever. IIRC it's about 1/2 inch diameter and maybe 1.5 inch long. Mine came off while I was doing a valve adjustment and afterward when I started it up it went to wide-open, scared the pants off me. I tampered with the throttle linkage and got it to start normally, but no matter what I did, it kept jumping up to WOT when I touched the pedal. I gave up and took it to my mechanic. He noticed the spring was missing, replaced it, didn't charge me. So ... if the 617 is supposed to have that spring, check for it. If you can get that solved, then check into your vacuum situation. My car wouldn't shut off at the key when it first ran off wide-open like that, but once I got the spring on there and got the idle speed normal, it shuts off very easily at the key. Knock on wood ... the way my cars have been lately, I shouldn't take anything for granted ...

Good call ... as such if you're going to play around with it, good idea to have a CO2 extinguisher ... or a big block of wood to block off the air intake, something to cut fuel lines, etc. Be armed because if it runs away, you won't have time to format a game plan.

It6 applies to all 617's with a vaccum shutoff valve non turbo or-Turbodiesels--When the guy replaced the shutoff valve he didn't get the hook end reattached to the new valve--The main cause of a run away diesel on the benz's.
