Is there an alternate location for decoding VIN#?!

More background info: friend of mine had a nice reliable MB '91 300D (2.5litre) - that had some type catastrofic engine failure - I didn't get more details but it sounds like it a broken rod or some type of piston failure from the description... he found the vehicle with the above VIN number as an engine donor, but that vehicle supposedly is a 1993 model which he claims has the same body style and same 5 cylinder engine... possible?! Will '93s engine fit in my friend's '91 body?

Wanted to run the VIN on the donor to see what this car really is... but it seems I can't...

You can send your VIN to the MB Classics Center and they will send you the build info. Sometimes they send a jpg of the build sheet as well.

A '93 300D engine is the same as the '91 300D engine, with IIRC possibly a slight difference in wastegate control (easily swapped), not sure about the wastegate though, might be the same.

the 91-94 2.5L motor has a timing chain defect, be SURE to inspect the cam gear for wear. odds are good the 91 lost a chain and took out many parts.

Wouldn't a 91 be too early in the production for the chain defect? I thought those were later, maybe even exclusively in 93. When I researched it a while back, I concluded that neither of mine (91 and 92) were affected.

Russian Website Vin Decoder Registration

Regarding the Russian website and the VIN decoder.
Today - August 25th, 2010 I registered with the site and went to a page where people post there VIN number and the moderator posts a .pdf file
with the results of what they call a datacard.

The format of the post was simply: VIN# English

Indicating that I wanted the datacard in English (default is russian).

My conclusion is that the site will no longer allow self service VIN lookup
and still offers the service for free. I did not wait even 10 minutes for the reply post. So it was quick.

But really, can we please get a site here in the USA that is in English
and does the same job ?

Another note: years ago when I used the Russian site in self-service mode I got much more detail about my car. This datacard had very, very little detail for my old car.
