Have you checked you fuel pressure?? This will determine whether or not you have some sort of restriction and the condtion of your fuel system. This should be added to your list of preventive maintenance ie. fuel filters, valve adjustment, ect!!!

I forgot about the cap once. Then I asked the nice lady to take the cap off after I had pressurized the system. Whooah nelly, It's a good thing she wasn't wearing her go to meeting clothes . Out of the bowels of hell it came. I can laugh about it now but it was not a laughing matter then

Ha-ha - in retrospect: funny leaving the cap on, then having your helper remove it! :/

So, how does one go about checking fuel pressure?

Smoke above 3k: I recall my father purchasing a brand new F-250 diesel in 83. It had a hit and miss bad smoking problem on the highway. We finally realized it only smoked when using the rear fuel tank, and further inspection found a factory-smashed line along the frame.

Starved that IH engine, and she'd smoke like heck.
