Deliveryvalve`s write up is excellant. Just follow it, and you won`t go wrong.

However, in a JY, you won`t have the luxury of a Jack. you won`t be able to raise the Differential to get high enough to remove the axles from the hub, unless you find one the workers forgot to remove.

It is possible I suppose if I read one of the above posts correctly, that mentioned to drop the Diff with the axles. seems they would hang up in the hub splines and not slide out. that is with the Homokenetic axles.
It`s hard enought to remove one w/o additional hang ups.

If the Annular axles were installed (two piece) then it would be easy to remove.

Especially in a junk or pick and pull yard. Just undo the four bolts at the rear of the diff and let the subframe and diff hang on the emergency brake cables. Then you have easy access to the bolts on the top of the diff. Wire a 2 x 4 across the diff and axles so the axles won't fall and damage the CV joints.
Don't bother to undo the drive shaft center bearing slip ring nut because the diff assy can be just pulled back from the flex disk. Also the flex disk is much easier to unbolt when the sub-frame is dropped.

I have done this twice now on 84D & 85SD in the JY. I take my own blocks and jack to support the diff to lower it. Remember to unbolt the axles in the hub and give them a tap with a brass bar to get them moving then start lowering. Shift the diff to the right and pull out the left axle from the hub, it will rest on the exhaust pipe. Next move the diff to the left and slide out the right axle from the hub.
Don't even drain the oil.

Charlie,

You would be correct! That is the write up I used from the DIY section to replace mine.

I followed that thread/post to the letter and had no issues at all. Including getting the little stub 1/2" drive wrench.

I just installed the one I had with the axles intact, since I had a complete assembly with axles still attached.

Thanks again DeliveryValve!!
