rebuilding 300d engine Help

While removing components I lost tension on timing chain before I was able to get a mark on the intermediate shaft to injection pump. I have no reference to where it might be. What should I do before I start assembling the block. How can I find out where the injecter pum shoud be? I have never rebuilt an engine before. Any help would be appreciated.
