My Wife's 300SD Has The Shakes and Drinks More!

We own two 300SDs, 1981 and 1982. The 1981 has developed a noticeable shake when first cranked in the day. The air cleaner does the St Vitus' Dance. In time it will smooth out. Acceleration is normal. I have recently adjusted the valves and even went back a second time to insure that I had them all adjusted properly. The shock mounts on the air filter housing are all new. The only other recent variable is that I have used about three tanks of fuel from a different source (BP). For the last 10 years, I have exclusively used QT Diesel from one of their high volume truckstops. I have used the same number of tanks of BP fuel in my 1982 and it shows no effect.

One final thing. It appears that the MPG for the 1981 has gone down slightly (from 23 to 20).

Slightly clogged injector? Any other ideas?

Check your glow plugs, a failing one or two will produce the symptoms you describe.

Depending on your location, you be using a winter blend of fuel, it may have less energy per gallon, which equals lower mpg.

I thought the shakes came after you quit drinking... ? oh we're talking about cars, never mind.

I know what a bad glow plug will do. This shaking lasts longer than a bad glow plug can produce.

I live in Georgia. It's still in the 70s in the afternoons. I don't even know if we go to a winter fuel here. Also, my other 300SD isn't experiencing the same mileage drop - yet!

Let me rephrase my terminology. My "shake" really is a resonant point that has suddenly shown up. Rev the engine and it goes away. Let is idle back down and it returns. I've also tried adjusting the idle up and down to try to get around this resonance.

Adjusting the governor idle pin might be a viable strategy.

My 300SD is doing the same thing. And if you let it warm up a little, during the transition of temp, it will intermittently miss. I am going to check glow plugs soon. It seems to behave worse when it has less than 1/4 tank - perhaps tank strainer is clogged.

Go back to your other source of fuel quick. A diesel purge is in your future.

Hope you are right on the diesel purge suggestion. My '82 300D is doing the same thing Tom's 300SD is doing. Scary as hell.

My engine mounts are brand new. I used Uro mounts. The right engine shock absorber is new the left on appears OK. The resonance gets better upon reaching operating temperature so I didn't think the mounts/shock were the problem. This is my first installation of Uro Engine Mounts. I always have a can of Diesel Purge on hand. I also plan to go back to the trusted source of fuel.

Let's revisit the lowered fuel mileage. About 2 months ago I replaced one of the gears in the odometer. It had one tooth missing. Could I have something binding the odometer which is causing the indicated mileage to be lower than it actually is? Could this binding have been the cause of the broken tooth?

I would investigate the drop in MPG's as a separate issue. If you have known distances between points, you should start there.
I also have fresh engine mounts & shocks, a fresh valve adjustment but I have a symptom you do not mentions, an occasional miss. Thus the reason I am leaning towards a partially clogged injector. I hope to be able to do a purge this weekend. My hands may be full doing service on mine and my brothers' jeeps.
I will keep you posted if you do the same!

Here are today's updates.

I adjusted the idle compensation pin last night for minimum air filter shake. Got some pretty good results. Drove it today and I still feel some "roughness," but it is better. I may try a pair of Lemfoerder motor mounts. If that doesn't cure the idle resonances, I can keep the Uro motor mounts for the next time I need mounts on my other car.

Since my other car is a 1982 300SD, I'm going to swap the speedometer heads between cars for a tank of fuel and see if the fuel mileage problem switches cars. That way, I'll know if it is an odometer problem or not.
