Casting a new Console Center Pin
1 Attachment(s)
After seeing so many of these things broken by heavy handed people (myself included for the first one), I decided to make my own. I have the mold and a sample that someone else poured. For mine, I'm going with a two part mix that should cure very hard. If it works like I think it's going to, I may be selling some. Here's the mold, reference and the prototype.

Cool. Put me a down for a couple.
|
That's a good idea. Let us know if it's indestructible!
. |
I'll take one too..

When I broke mine I just repaced it with a Screw.
If it is the Pin at the back of the Counsel I just drilled a hole small enough so that there was enough meat left for the Screw to thread into and Screwd it in from the out side. |
Pardon my profound ignorance, but what exactly is this?
|
What is this? This is kickass owners picking up where the manufacturer left us hanging in the wind.
Bravo! I have two spare panels that will need these once you have it perfected. Name the price! |
I would make it a little flexible. Just enough so it would resist snapping when you're pulling back on the console. My 2 cents. Great idea by the way. :)

Some people do not know you need to slide the Wood of the Counsel to the rear and pull up on it breaking the Plastic Pin. In my case I simply did not slide the Wood back far enough and when I pulled up the brittle pin broke off. I was in a hurry so I just put a screw in to replace the Pin. |
I was actually going to get around to doing this myself at some point, but since it looks like you've beaten me to it, put me down for a few when you get them perfected. Who couldn't use a few of these?

Fantastic response guys. I'll be casting this week, and I'll keep you posted. I'll add pics of it installed as well. My only real concern is shipping. May go with padded envelope, but not sure it'd make it. I really don't want to spend $$ on little boxes if I can help it.
EDIT: Couldn't stand the suspense, so I started casting today. A little sanding of flash, and some trial fits and I'll let you know how they work. |
I had the occasion to run across and old center console. The one I found had a metal pin in it. I think it was from a euro model, late 70's. It was still in tact.

SAAAWEET
HOW DID YOU ATTACH IT TO THE WOOD? |
I wanted to use Gorilla glue, but can't find it. So, I used CA with some kicker. Instant bond, and holds fantastic. Now, what else can I mold.....
|
The PO just reglued a post to the wood with 2 part epoxy on mine
|
Nice work. :)
You could do a little torture testing of a replacement or two to see how they will hold up in shipping, but I suspect a simple padded mailer will suffice. |
I'll be a guinea pig recipient, for the torture test of the mailing :P

Sent two out via padded envelope. If they make it safe, the charge will be $10 shipped via padded envelope. I'll let Daw post his opinion whether he likes them or not.
|
Did you make a bunch of these? I'd love to buy a couple if you have.
|
I've been busy, but I should be able to crank some more out. I did send another one out, and it made it safely. The padded envelope seems to be working. As soon as I get some more done, I'll contact the people that sent me a PM and see if I can get some more out there. Appreciate the support.

How are you doing?

Some ideas -
Two-part epoxy is probably the best choice to reattach the broken pin. If the remaining pad is thick enough, it may be possible to center-drill the pin & pad to repair it with a thin screw. If the pin is missing, the same screw could support a bit of vacuum-hose or be wrapped with electical-tape as a substitute. The wood in one of my 240Ds is so poor, if the above fails, I'd probably just put a screw in from outside. Happy Motoring, Mark |
I could use one of these. Let us know when you go into production!
|
I have sent 4 out, with good response so far. I have three more already spoken for, and two more available right now. Padded envelopes have been working well for shipping. Just got a new shipment of resin, so I'll start cranking more out.
|
Adding a strip of bubble wrap will sure help eliminate shipping problems.
|
console pin
mine showed up in a padded mailer...no problems what so ever
Have not been able to install it yet..looks like it will do a great job! |
Very nice
I got my first one. Fits perfectly. I ordered a second one to put in the original console that I intend to refinish. Honestly, the quality of these pins look to be better than the original part!
By the way, getting those staples out was a huge pain. Any tips on how to remove them more easily? |
I'll take one too, I'm close to Suffolk, maybe we can meet.
|
toomany, I'm only home on Sundays lately it seems. Perhaps we can meet for lunch?
TnBob, I do try to wrap the pin portion in either bubbles or paper (I couldn't find the bubbles for one of them). Sent out 5, no breakages. |
put me in for one.

finally got my pin installed. Used gorilla glue. The glue bottle was all dried out. Hope I got enough glue on it.
So far so good! |
Keep us posted on how it's working. The first one I did is still holding up fine.
|
Any more being made...
Are you still molding these pins ? Let me know please?
Thanks, |
console pin
Just an update on the pins for the console:
Still holdin steady!!! Great job thanks! |
Hey, nice! Do the same for the door panel hooks on w126 door panels!
|
Bump... Any thoughts on making more?
|
I have thought about making a few more.. but just took a job in Syracuse, NY and am way too busy getting things finished for the move.. Maybe once I get settled, and can find my garage again.

Nice part. I've used industrial strength Velcro in place of broken pins.
