URGENT: Frozen W123 Manual Transmission

The four-speed manual transmission has failed. No warning. I start it up, shift it into reverse, and it won't leave. The stick moves around, it's no longer in the reverse position, and it won't shift into any gear now. If I release the clutch, the car goes into reverse, so the reverse gear is obviously engaged. The reverse lights also aren't on. Seems like a linkage problem, anyone else with this problem, or know how to solve it?

That happend to me right after the transmission swap last weekend. I jacked the car up and put it back on at the side of the road.

Me too. Can be a bit of a puzzle at first, depending on what has happened, but on mine the linkage that fell off jammed the other stuff and it took a while to undo, then reattach them. They "pop" into position and I believe they are supposed to have clips to keep them on the levers at the transmission, but the rubber gets old and loose and they come off. Good luck, Jim

I once had one of the arms break off the bottom of the shifter. I have also had shift rods fall off on my 62 fintail in Florida on a trip. I crawled under and put the arm on and finished the day out with only fourth gear, then fixed it enough to get home with coat hanger.

The trans may have tried to switch into to two gears at once. Get under the car and shake the levers on the trans until they are all in N. You may need take the linkage off. I had a similar problem happen to me on the way to work one day, I pulled over agave em a wiggle and was on my way.

If it goes into two gears it would lock solid from both ends.

If that is even possible. In my case it was in gear and then another lever came out of N but not into gear.

If you're not under the car, then it isn't very obvious.......

**edit**

It would be nice if you would put your '83 240D into your signature, then we wouldn't have to go hunt for your year. Linkages off the tranny changed in '81.
Here is a pic of what your tranny should look like. Follow the shifter linkages to the arms coming off the tranny....
