head gasket 84 300SD finished with mods

Well I finally took the challenge and did the head gasket on my 300SD. found two points of interest on the old head gasket...

Did a poor mans' valve job..drill and good ole' Clover near stem seals, new head gasket, eliminated cruise control (did not work), cold air, 240D oil vapor seperator, EGR mod, even put a flow master in the back end.

lined up crank and cam...took it to a buddy who has a pulse timer adapter and the IP was at 10degrees...got it to 16 BUT ran out of time because I will have to take the injector lines loose to get more twist on the IP. It was real tight and a pain to turn! Runs good so far...

I am going to try and get my Monarks in this weekend and give the IP another little bump to get her closer to 24.

Get that useless cone filter off of there! Why go through the trouble of all that work on the engine and then proceed to destroy it with dirt/dust getting sucked in?? Its been proven time and time again that the stock paper element flows more air than the engine could hope to suck in, and has much better filtration than a cone like that. There is no performance gain to be had.

Thanks for the advice. I know the engineeers calculated air flow etc..when they desgined the intake system...BUT the brackets break-fail and cause aggrevation...The original air filter bracket on this car nearly ate thru the intake mainfold before I got it. I simply used the airsystem I had...eliminated the 180 bend...bracket issues... and this filter is coned in front center as well..WITH the intake and the flow master on it it spools quicker sounds good and has lots of free flowing air...

Its was not trying to make this a race vehicle but I am a FIRM BELIEVER air in air out. Motors like to BREATH___just like us___more air more energy less air lesss energ and so on.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

thanks again

You are correct, motors like to breath, but only clean air. I'm with pawoSD, get rid of that K&N. And after reading an oil filter article in the latest issue of the TDR, don't even thing about using one of their oil filters on one of your other vehicles.

there is nothing wrong with k&n's as long as you dont have a maf and you clean and oil it correctly every once and a while... I dont use them i use oil-less cone's but that is my personal choice, to each his own.
