93 300d ip timing help

hey out there. well i bought a 93 300d turbo. it needed the ip timer replaced, the cam for the vacuum was warn bad. i got the timing gear off another motor that was good. i installed it on the car and it didnt run. so i bought the ip timing tool, that hold the pump in place. i turned the pump till it fuel came out the #1 injector line that i cracked. then i used the tool to hold the ip. well i put it back together and now it runs, but not right. it idles sort of ok, but the motor sounds a little loud and its smoking out the exhaust(white smoke). when i try to drive it it has no power. wont barely go up the drive way. when in park it revs up and bogs a little, then at 3k rpms it kinda clears up and revs up high. heres a few question for you guys. when installing the timer gear, do the ears of it need to go in special place{the ones that are the advance on the gear)? i know theres some cut out on the front cover, that allow you to slid it in, but dose it need to be turned after slipped in? i set the crank to 15 degrees atdc before taking it apart. any help would be much appreciated

I do not believe that the above in blue is they way the Fuel Injection Locking/Timing pin is supposed to be used. When you use it; it is entirely mechanical and you do not do any Fuel flowing of the #1.

Also you might want to remove the Valve cover and line up the Camshaft Timing Gear Mark with the Timing Mark on the Bearing Cap to be sure that the Camshaft timing is OK. When it left the Factory it was lined to Zero Degrees (Top Dead Center, TDC).
But, since you have a used chain I would not expect it to be on Zero (TDC); 2-4 degrees maybe. But, if it is way off a tooth could have been skipped.

well in all the manuals it says to set it at 15*after tdc then lock in the ip. the reason i turned it to #1 was b/c the first time i did it i didnt have the tool locked in right, so i lost the #1 position. i did take off the valve cover and locked the timing chain to the cam gear with a wire tie before taking the cam gear off

Yep, that's not how you use the tool. It does not lock the pump in any position, only one certain position (15 atdc). The FSM had a handy-dandy picture of how it works that someone posted here before...

Shouldn't be much of an issue. Engine at 15, IP with tool locked with that audible click and inability to rotate, install in the middle of adjustment range on engine so you can fine tune it with the adjuster. Thats it.

What do you use to rotate the pump when it's off the engine anyways? If you're not already, I suggest using your broken timing gear to turn it.
