Keepin' the Dream Alive

I was reading one of those threads on here yesterday where people talk about how great diesel MBs are (and they are) and someone made a great point about how many of them exist outside the range of good parts sources and mechanics which led me to our most recent vacation. We were just in Morocco over the Holidays and snapped some photos of a bunch of w123 200 and 240d's in Marrakech. They looked as if they had a million miles on them and that each mile had been hell. Amazing!

If the pictures load properly you will also see my other half standing next to a Mercedes T1(which I wanted to bring home so badly!) in Fes (and she probably was saying something like: why do I have to stand by this piece of *****)

Phil

Ohh i remeber growing up in germany, and of coarse I played soccer. I played for a team that did not have a lot of money and where parents did not want to make long trip for the soccer games. Our coach used to work for the Hermes versand and they had that exact color van. Us kids would all(an entire soccer team) jump in the back of that van and sit on the flat floor to get to games and back. Good times

My motorhome is based on the TN van. I don't know the specifics on these vans only that mine 'was' a 409D before RMB of Germany did their 650s conversion. AFAIK know it is the only Class A Mercedes in North America. I have seen quite a few TN and MB100 van conversions (like a Westy) but no full on Class A body-on-chassis like the RMB or Hymer motorhomes.

MB100 on Craigslist:

Similar externally but this one is a meter shorter than mine with a different interior layout (only the refrigerator is the same).

Ok, What's the story with the second picture? All those 123's. I'm guessing it's not the local MB club chapter. Is that where all the 123's go when are boosted off the streets in Europe? Rather like Top Gear's show in Albania fromt the looks of it.

Picture #2 looks like an MB GTG in the States.

I love MB diesels - that's the only brand car I've owned for 20 years now. I'm only on my second one, which I didn't need. The '83 300SD with 305K was running and tuned-up fine when I sold it.

Thanks for sharing, guy!

Here's a picture of me in Egypt with a 200. Most of them are gas there. Morroco is known to be the W123 capital of Africa! You can find them in Egypt but not as common as Morroco.

Looks like a FIAT 131. I had a 131 for awhile and I usually got 25 to 30 mpg.

In regards to all those Mercedes in Morocco, I suspect one reason there are so many has to do with their closeness to Europe. Cheaper to ship one there.

Does anyone know if 123s were made after 1985 - outside of Germany?

There's a city in Morocco called Ouarzazate, where they make movies. A lot of the real classics are kept there and are used by locals as taxis when they are not used in movies
