headlight switch repair?

OK, I did start with the search function to see if this information was already here, and I didn't find anything.

My car is a 1977 240D.

For some reason I let my brother drive my car today, and out of habit, he pulled the headlight switch to turn on the fog lights, something I've never done. This resulted in a few minutes of strange lighting behavior that ended in no lights at all, and a switch that just flopped around with no detentes anymore.

We got home and I reached up under there to find the switch in two pieces, flopping around. Pulled it out and realized that I had a real headache on my hands.

Is there any way to put this thing back together, or do I just need a new one? It's a bit of an urgent issue, since this is currently my daily driver. I did rescue all of the ball bearings that came falling out, but I haven't been able to figure out how, or if it can go back together.

I just had this happen to mine, did you find out if it can be rebuilt? I am buying a replacement in a couple of days if not.

Its a good time to get another one from a junk yard and see what a working unit really looks like.

X2, head to the JY for another one.
If you could get all the parts back together, what makes you think it won`t come apart again?

Be sure to disconnect the Battery before working on it.

I need to replace the one on our 80 240D, the detent won`t hold for the Fog Lights. I have the replacement, from your experience with one falling apart I better get to it soon.

This is the first I have heard of one coming apart. 36 yrs is good service.

I did some searching in the parts catalog above and several chassis models used the same head Light Switch.
