OM617 Transmission Removal Question

I am in the process of removing the transmission from my 1985 300TD to replace the front pump and I am wondering if I need to remove the starter bolts to get the transmission free. I have all of the external connections removed from the transmission, have removed the torque converter bolts, and have broken free all of the transmission to engine bolts except the ones on top. Of course, the starter bolts seem super stuck and I am apt to not mess with them unless I have to. I have read all I can find on splitting the transmission from the engine and nothing says much about the starter. I would also be curious to see if there are any members in central NC with a transmission jack I might could rent or borrow.
Thanks!

Shane
