floor pad replacement.
This worked out well and was really cheap so I figured I'd post it here. My AC flooded my floors and soaked the factory padding so I scrapped it and replaced it with this:
Before: After: I was worried about how the floor mats would lay with the thinner padding but it worked out fine. I drove it with no padding and with the roof stuff and I can tell a big difference. It may even be quieter than the factory padding. Should be good to go with the carpet installed. Anyway, it was only about $15 at Lowes for the roll and I still have quite a bit left

Nice work -- and great idea, thanks. I've got some older once wet areas of my floor boards and mats and this looks like a great fix..
thanks |

Did you peel and stick the whole thing or just on the edges? Just wondering for possible future replacement. If the whole thing was stuck, would getting it back up be a pain if water got back into the car. Wondering and typing as I go.

it would work best if it's stuck all the way across. just on the edges, and all noises would still pass through as the metal vibrated. stuck, and the metal has to vibrate the padding...
if it's too thin... how about two layers?

I didn't notice any fumes this morning. I'll know more in a few days. Some of the stuff I've read on other forums say that it doesn't get smelly but we'll see.
I just stuck it on with all the backing removed and yea, I'll bet it would be a PITA to remove. With the car idling in the garage it's a LOT quieter! I'll bet if I ran it farther up the firewall it would be super quiet.

I used the same stuff in post #24, page 2 here: StaggerLee's Rust Repair Thread 1980 300TD
I haven't noticed any smell at all.

I did that under my rear seat when I got the one I have now. I also installed some sound deadening material on the inside of the sunroof (huge difference in the rain), under the hood and under the trunk lid.
Do your carpets still have the factory sound absorber attached? If so, should be fine. That looks nice.

I have the factory pads on my carpets and they are in good shape. I don't think this stuff would work well without the molded padding on the mats.
My original padding has been in the Ga. sun, on a shingle roof for three days now and they're still damp If they dry out OK I may put them back in. I was just worried that they may smell funky... I have enough of the peel and seal stuff to do the rear floor as well. I was also thinking about running it up as far as I can get it on the passenger side firewall where the exhaust runs. Can't hurt anything, right?

I think i will get some of this and line the back of my underdash panels with it in my W115. That car is kinda loud inside at high speeds compared to my gasser 123.
