300D Blower Control Motor Cable

I have a euro 300D that has the manual blower control, very similar to a 240d. Recently i pulled apart the dash to replace the switch and figured that since i was in there i would replace the cable as well.

Here is the question, on one end of the blower cable there is a circle of the wire, like it supposed to slide over some sort of pin. Using a mirror and flashlight i can see that the existing cable it connected with a little clip, i have removed the clip, but how do you get the coil off the plastic lever. I am sure the plastic lever has a bit of a tapper or some sort of lip to keep the cable in place.

Please advise.

thanks.
