606 IP tuning
I'd like to check the timing on my '95 606 IP and after searching for procedures I haven't come up with anything specific to the 606. Would the drip method work when there is no hand fuel pump? Would an A/B timing light work? The book only mentions the digital tester which is not available to me and if possible this is something I'd rather do myself. I've seen the position sensing/positioning plug but don't know if that is accurate for timing or only initial set up of the pump. My IP was replaced 40k ago and after doing some work myself I've found some artifacts of previous work that aren't up to snuff. 100k on the engine and it runs well but I'm changing out the heat shields and taking the injectors in for balancing and would like to put my mind to rest on the timing at the same time.
One more thing; I've noticed references to millivolt testing of the glow plug as a timing indicator but haven't seen much follow up. Sounds good but is there a llink to a definitive procedure that has been tested for the shady tree guy (me.) |

I'm also considering the millivolt method. I recently R&R'd the IP on my '95 E300, and I simply used the locking tool to hold the IP in position while it was out of the car, and then adjusted the engine to the right timing position read from the crankshaft balancer, and then installed the IP. Engine runs fine and returns about 32 mpg on the highway, 26 around town, but I wonder if I could do better.
