CV axle findings (W123)
I would like to show that even after your CV axle boots are bad and the oil has leaked out that your axles are good to go for a while.
My axles had the "clack-clunk" for about 60 miles when the boots went out on a drive home from out of town. Rather than fret about new axles and replacing the old I decided to pack the assembly with bearing grease and see how things went.
20k later things have worked out without a problem. I repacked the bearings at 10K and today at 20K. So I suggest checking the grease level at those intervals if not sooner if you want to do what I have done.
To help keep the grease in, better and not entirely, I slid the boot farther in and and used a zip-tie to hold it in place. (See photo)
If anything, this is a good method to hold your car over until you get new axles.
I'm simply relaying what I have found.
