95 E300D shifting point
what are the correct transmission shifting rpm for a 95 E300D. Mine will upshift at 4500 rpm with pedal to the floor (not pressing the kickdown)
it also upshifts very quickly - I mean normal city driving causes the transmission to get to 4th gear at 40 mph. I tried to adjust the transmission cable - but all it caused was a harsh upshift in all gears. |
With the cable adjusted as per the manual, and with fairly gentle to moderate pressure mine changes up @ approx 2500. This translates at the lowest speed I get into 4th is 30mph.
|
whats the rpm shifting point when you go full bore joining the M1
|
She'll wind up pretty high before changing if I put my foot down, more like 3500-4000. I tend to hold mine in 3rd manually if I want the best acceleration, this engine doesn't wake up 'till it's passed 2500 anyway...
|
hmm - thats what I do too. hold it in 3 and let her wind up.. I think thats normal for this vehicle then.
|
Zulfiqar, that's about how mine behaves, too, so I think that's normal. It seems to be designed so that under partial throttle it favors earlier shifts for a smoother ride, with later (harder) shifts at WOT (wide open throttle).
I have the Intro to Service manual for the E300D which lists the factory-spec shift points. I'll look them up and post here when I get home. |
Thanks - I would appreciate it.

So adjusting the bowden cable didn't effect the shift points at all? I think it should. Shortening it ups the shift points and lengthening it lowers them.
|
I adjusted the bowden about 1 thread outwards and all it did was harshen the shifts when below normal engine temperature.
|
The reason I asked this is because if the engine rev limit is 5500 rpm why does the transmission not allow the engine to go above 4500 rpm during acceleration.

Try a few threads inward. It should raise the shift points. |
inwards would loosen the cable causing even more early shifts wouldnt it.
|
Yes, if inwards loosens, that's the wrong direction to move shifts up.
How is the vacuum in your system? How long have you owned it? Maybe the car had hard shifts due to lower than normal vacuum and instead of solving that problem someone just moved the shift points downward whether they would be less harsh due to the position of the accelerator pedal. |
I'll get a vacuum gauge and measure vacuum, All vacuum functions work in the car, the PO had the entire A/C renewed for the evaporator problem. the only vacuum problem was the rear headrests which I sorted out, the problem was behind the brake booster. And while there I had to plug a red/green vacuum line going to the right fender of the car as I could not find the other broken bit to connect it to under the wiper mechansim. A thick rubber vacuum line was put directly into the dash control main vacuum line bypassing the multiline yellow joint - I think its called an amplifier
The shifts are very soft under part throttle and aggressive at full throttle, but it does not like to downshift unless I push the pedal all the way but not hit the kickdown switch. |
If your car shifts at 4500 rpm when floored there is something wrong. Suggest changing fuel filters.
When I did the EGR modification, the "eagerness" of the trans to downshift under part throttle improved markedly. I highly recommend this mod. It improves drivability nicely. Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 342K |
