What is the rep on the 350SDL (126)

Are these cars terrible? I asked my father-in-law, 30-yr cert -B tech, who says if taken care of, they are fine.

The OM603.97 engine has a reputation for bending con rods. There are many threads on this forum about this problem. It seems to be a problem that doesn't affect every engine and the problem doesn't necessarily appear after a certain number of miles or years. Use the search function, look for "bent rods" and you'll get a lot to read.

Other than that it is a good car, or so I have heard.

I have one 350SDL (and 3 300sdl's). I plan on swapping the engine out in the next few weeks. It's not that it's bad so much, but I have a very low mileage engine out of a 1987 300SDL that's wrecked. When it's time to sell my 350, I can just avoid all the rumors and rabble about the 3.5L by just installing an engine with a much more solid reputation. But, yeah, for the most part, the early ones that havent been replaced or upgraded will at some point fail. But all engines will fail, it's just that odds are these will fail because of that reason, that's all. Some go to 300,000+ miles before they fail. Although, the general understanding is that if it fails because of rods, it would be before 100,000 miles. Get a carfax on it. See if the dealer has already replaced the engine. If dealer names show up in the history, call them.
