Idle Speed: Reading in Drive or Park?

My 85 SD idles in Drive (with A/C on in 100 degree temps right now in South Texas) at about 800 rpm. When I put it in Park, the tach shows right at 900 rpm. Just wondering if 750+/- 50 or so is ideal, should it be read in gear or in park? Car seems pretty smooth and good performance as it is now.
