Supplemental Fan variable speed?

So I've been driving with the supplemental fan off since I bought my car. After inspecting the temp switch, I noticed that it was unplugged. Now I know why it was unplugged. The fan does it's thing normally but randomly it starts to shake and stutter. It's a really crazy LOUD sound. Very chaotic! If I shut the car off then back on, the fan goes back to normal. Then after a while it's back to insanity.

I just removed it to inspect it. It doesn't seem like its damaged. There isn't much play to it. You can see where the fans have been rubbing on it's frame.

So do these fans have variable speeds? Like the hotter the car gets the faster it spins. Just wondering if that's the reason why it was normal one second and the next it was hell on earth.

Are these fixable? Is it worth taking apart?

Some MBs of that vintage have a 2-speed fan. Low speed triggered by the AC system high pressure switch, high speed triggered by a coolant temp switch. I think your car only has the AC system switch so it would be single speed.

w123 has a single speed fan only triggered by the A/C Refrigerant Temperature Sensor.
