I haven't completely unscrewed it... It's pretty obvious that a previous bonehead screwed it up :rolleyes:

Kind of moot point, it's done.

Why did ze Germans decide to run oil lines all over the friggin' place? There are oil lines in the cabin...

I can't tell if the bung is aluminum or steel.

It might not have been previously cross threaded. On mine a piece of the Aluminum Nipple stuck in the threads of the Nut and proceeded to act as a cutter and cut up the last 3 threads on the Nipple when I removed the Oil Cooler Line nut.

The "Screwed Nipples" are actually the same fittings that screw into the Oil Filter housing + there is a Metal Seal Ring that goes between the Fitting and the Oil Filter Housing.

Well, the bottom nut fought to the last thread as well :mad: It's similar to what you describe diesel911. I don't think it was cross threaded and the female threads look OK. At least it didn't pull the threads off :rolleyes:

I think it's that either corrosion set up between the steel and aluminum or the threads on the cooler weren't machined correctly. I'm thinking the latter...

I believe I can get it back together OK. There's a lot of thread, it's just a little buggered. I've straightened out worse with a thread file. It has some kind of bubble flare so hopefully it won't require a lot of torque to seal.

Yes, Oil Cooler Lines do not seal on the Threads.

Pick out any pieces of Thread stuck in the Oil Cooler Line Nut.

If you feel there is enough threads left you could degrease the inside threads (another job for Brake Cleaner) of the Nut and the threads on the Nipple and assemble them with Blue Loctite.
If you need to remove them again heating with a Propane Torch easily takes care of the Loctite.

Well that is easy to do - mess them up. In my recent engine swap, I did install new hoses. But when it came time to putting on the new hoses, I had real difficulty in getting the hose started correctly. So I took my dremel tool with that minature wire brush and really brushed off the old nipples and a lot of junk came off. Then I gave it a squirt of WD40 and they went on so nice I couldn't hardly believe it.
