Did you check out the two possibilities suggested in the other thread on the topic, glow plugs and vacuum line to the shut off. If so, what were the results of the investigation?

keith1983317 07-03-2011 10:27 AM

yes i checked all that it runs fine when started

kerry 07-03-2011 10:29 AM

How did you test the glow plugs?

keith1983317 07-03-2011 10:54 AM

with a meter it is 80 degres really should not need plugs when it it does start it smokes alot at first almost like it is geting too much fuel but i didnt thank diesels can get too much fuel

kerry 07-03-2011 10:59 AM

Did you check voltage or resistance? Hard start, smoking upon start can be a symptom of malfunctioning glow plugs, especially if it starts with wd-40. Do you know the compression numbers on the engine?

keith1983317 07-03-2011 11:35 AM

checked both volts a ohms it started fine before i screwed with the alda so it must have sompthing to do with fuel delivery injection pump probably should have just left it alone

Could be coincidental, but unlikely. Lots of people here have messed with their ALDA's and a no-start condition as a result is very rare. I can't remember another instance. Can anyone else? What ohm readings did you get?

Can you detail the exact things you did in the process of working on the alda so there's more data for people to bounce around in their minds?

keith1983317 07-03-2011 11:50 AM

about .6 ohms all five plugs . first screwed out alda about half a turn let the engine cool then no start so removed alda still no start then put alda back on now have to start it with wd -40 but when it does start it runs fine and starts good when engine is HOT

kerry 07-03-2011 12:00 PM

Does it make any difference if you hold the accelerator pedal down when attempting to start it cold? How many miles on the engine? Do you know the compression numbers? Generally no start cold but start hot is an indication of non-functioning glow plugs or poor compression. Can't think of anything with the ALDA which would cause it.

keith1983317 07-03-2011 12:04 PM

no compresion test done , no difference when pressing pedel down , the car has about 180,000 mile

Yeah, I broke my ALDA and it made my car the SLOWEST CAR IN THE WORLD, but it idled just fine...look for something you disturbed inadvertently.

kerry 07-04-2011 08:41 PM

There are two threads on the same topic. Maybe a mod can merge the two so diagnosis can follow a more unified path.

What might have been disturbed that would cause no start cold and good start hot? Glowplugs or a fuel leak are the only two things that seem possible to me. Don't know why either would have been disturbed by removing the ALDA. I'm still in favor of a compression check before progressing. It will provide information which will be useful in the future even if low compression is not the problem.
