Glow plugs or Glow plug controller?

2005 e320cdi

recently taking little longer to crank/turn over---suspected battery

replaced both batteries... now the CEL is on -- stays on

Yesterday-- same slow start (temp around 28 f) ... and for the first time
the Glow plug stayed lite stayed on for around 30 seconds

Is this a GP Controller issue? or Glow plugs? -- I thought w/ bad GP the car would actually indicate GP # in the Info messages?

what does the jury think?

Your DTC codes will tell you what's going on. Do you have a MB code reader or similar?

A basic OB2 code reader will tell you which plug if it's a bad plug. That's what's most likely. However, controllers do go bad...on one of mine it went bad around 140k miles.

I have 138k now... and have been parking it outside so far this winter- cuz the 87 sdl in garage until I store her

Will simple resistance test to ground-- work to tell me if a Plug is bad?

what did they charge u for labor on controller? Looks like PITA to get to it

Yes...here's a good guide: https://dieselgiant.com/glowplugrepair.htm

But why not just grab a cheap code reader?

I think it is a PITA to get to. In my case, the previous owner did it gratis as I was on the way to pick up the car....it failed after we had agreed upon a price. Part was $280...we split the cost.

Do you recall symptoms when Controller went bad?

Mine is normal start-- little more sluggish... GP Glow lite stays on -xtra 20-30 seconds ONLY on 1st start of day (so far)
Idles- rough for 4-5 seconds- smooths out (this is in 30-40 f degrees)

Check engine lite on all the time.

Had a friend scan- it did NOT give glow plug-- but he said code pointed to Controller or GP relay?

When I was getting Glow Plug and check engine light intermittently so I ran my iSoft and it was showing plug #2; but the plug checked put OK. Took it to my indi who has a Star diagnostic they pointed it out Control Module
