Zero volts at rear defroster defogger.

I posted this in the vintage thread but wasn't getting much traction.

I thought this particular forum was about diesel engine issues, so excuse me if it's out of place.

Anyway, the defroster wires were hanging loose in the trunk. With some pointers, I found the terminals behind the rear seat. I connected both and thought this little gremlin was behind me. But no...

When I pull the defroster lever, the lamp inside briefly comes on, but goes off again when I let it go. I get 0V at the terminal either pulled out or released. I'm assuming that the lamp should be on the roughly 30 minute period that the defroster timer allows, correct? If not..well, problem solved.

Working under the assumption that, the lamp should be on, I suppose the next likely place to look would be the relay, correct?

There's about 5 or 6 relays outboard the driver's foot well. Which one is for the defroster? How can one check if the relay is working or not? I think they run about $75 from the dealer. Anyone know where to get a working one cheaper?

I'd like to put my rear seat back together and move down the list to the next issue.

Thanks!
