The old 1981 300 SD locks only sometimes

Hi all,

Having an intermittent problem with locking up the old car. It either works smooth and easy to lock or stubbornly will NOT lock when I turn the key clockwise. I lubed up the key slot with graphiteand worked the key in and out. I also lubed all the lock pulls with a sillicone lubricant spray. The car has done this off and on over the years, and then work flawless for months. Any ideas on how to remove this curse?

thanks,

NicK

Does the orientation of the key make a difference? Maybe one set of teeth is more worn than the other.

If you are handy then put in keyless remote control and forget about the lock. It may be cheaper than to tinker with the lock. You may need to put an actuator in the door but it is easily done.

Don't do it. Fix it properly. Sounds like you have a vacuum problem to me. Maybe a $20 actuator going bad in the door.

Are you saying the key won't turn or the key turns but the locks don't lock? If the latter, it could be an electrical problem since the 126 door locks are actuated by an electric vacuum pump.

key lock

I can insert the key, and tried both sides, still won't work. When I insert the key, it can turn counter-clockwise but NOT clockwise at all. Interestingly, When driving down the road I can actuate all the door locks up & down! When I stop the car & try and lock it, it goes all stiff and would break a key if forced!
