It's not all gloom and doom!
Just looking at your pictures ..... your situation doesn't look all that dire. The plastic fuel lines just turn dark over time it doesn't have anything to do with "rust" in the fuel system ... if they aren't leaking I wouldn't touch them. As for the tank strainer .... it looks pretty good to me. The rust in the filler neck and on the cap isn't great but it isn't all that bad either ..... I've seen worse. Just providing you another perspective on your pictures. I've only had a tank taken out once to be cleaned and I had my local shop do it since I didn't want to mess with spilling fuel all over the place. In that case my fuel filters were clogging every 5,000 miles or so because I had an algee problem and my tank strainer was so mucked up you couldn't see through it. Good luck.

Skimmed the pictures too quickly!
Oops sorry I didn't look that closely at the strainer ..... obviously that isn't the tank strainer but the pre-filter/strainer .... which looks great. If your car had a problem with a dirty tank the strainer would be full of particles and you wouldn't be able to see through it. The "brown" color is just normal .... that's what diesel does to plastic.

The fuel lines are white when they are new and slowy age to a medium brown. As for the one inch "air bubble" in the fuel line when stopped, that isn't normal. My experience is that when there is an "air bubble" upon stopping that eventually you will develop a leak or other problems with the the shut-off-valve or the fuel pump. The "air bubble" happens because something in the system isn't tight and fuel is rolling back towards the tank. I've never really figured out for myself which componet was the offender on my vehicles, however, at around 200,000 miles and "leaking" on each one I have just replaced everything .... plastic fuel lines & o-rings, rubber fuel hoses, injection return hoses, fuel heat exchanger, delivery valve seals, shut-off-valve, and fuel pump. It's a little crazy to just replace everything but my wife is a traveling sales person and I didn't want her stuck on the side of the road some 100 miles from home .... I view it as break down insurance. The nice thing about replacing everything is that it is easy to do when the intake is off and then you are guarenteed some 100,000 miles or so with no fuel related problems whatsoever. That I can attest to on my cars.
