83 240D ign switch is out can it be jumped to get it home & if so what to do

I just traded some stuff for this car I am going tomorrow to pressure wash it to clean the algae off it and see what it needs to make it run. I can disconnect the vacuum from the shutoff valve and jumper the starter what other wires need to be connected to make it run to get it home? The ignition switch is disasassembled is there a steering lock or not. It is an automatic with 180 Kilometers on it for real! Cheers Dan

There is an ignition lock unless the whole assembly has been removed. There's a locking pin that goes from the ignition assembly into the steering column.

Go down to post #8, there is a picture of the pin that has to be pushed in to remove the lock assy.

Ignition lock cylinder, not the tumbler.....

Are you thinking of actually driving this?

1) A 29 year old car with 180 km
2) Algae
3) A disassembled steering lock.

Or are you trying to figure out how to load it on a trailer so any issues with brakes, steering, tranny, electrics don't become a problem? Rigging up an alternative fuel supply to avoid whatever's in the tank? Possibly damaging an otherwise okay engine trying to start without proper lube and with (maybe?) 30 yo oil?

It'd really suck to end up in the rear of the car in front of you, or in a ditch with only 180 km on the odo.

From your sig, it's clear you've got experience with diesels, so maybe I'm missing something?

This is a pic of a Steering Colum Lock; the actual Ignition Switch is the Female Plug with a bunch of Wires coming out of it that fits over the Pins in the Steering Colum pic.

You can jump your Starter down by the Starter Solenoid and get the Engine to Crank and Start but I do not think your Alternator is going to charge without the Ignition Switch being in the Run position or doing some more wiring bypasses.

Jumping the terminals shown in the pic will cause the Starter to crank the Engine.

yes

We got it started today jumped out the starter and disconnected the shutoff valve vac line . runs like a top. has 180,000Km on it Algae has been pressure washed off. Ign switch rear plate has been removed & the lock cylinder wont turn . have looked over the various threads on cylinder removal without key. Will try that since towing is a bit pricey. if I could remove the whole lock assembly then I could work on it in my shop much easier. As long as I could steer. Cheers Dan

You might want/ need to jump part of the switch to give you stop and turn lights. As with ANY 30+ year old vehicle, STOMP on the the brake pedal HARD before attempting to drive. If you are going to blow out a brake line, make it happen in the drive way; not the street.

The algae that worries the diesel people here is the algae inside the fuel tank; not on the exterior so you could pressure wash it away. Carry extra filters in case there is algae in the fuel tank and it clogs the current filters.

got it

Ground down the pin with a dremel, took all of 15 mins, pushed lock assembly aside and voila the steering is unlocked. drove it up and down the lane. Will check to see that brake lights do work the brakes definitley do. It was only taken off the road a couple of years ago when the Ign switch locked up and the owner unsucessfully attempted to repair it then lost interest. Cheers Dan & thanks
