Saw this on the weather channel.15,000 cars will be auctioned, scrapped or sold to be parted out. these are from the Huricane Sandy storm.

an incredable sight to see. 11 pictures to click on.

Wonder how many old MB`s are in that mix?

My son works for a crash parts manufacturer and importer. He has salvage yards as customers. One of the larger customers was saying how he is only buying "legitimately wrecked" cars and not storm damaged vehicles.

The salvage customer's reasoning is that salt water renders most parts not useable. Body parts rust, electronics are destroyed etc. I'll take his word for it because he'd be buying if it was a good deal.

Just say NO! It seemed like a good idea at the time but just try finding a quality used car now.

And the worst part, the law required the dealer taking the car in to destroy the engine by draining the oil, putting in a silicate fluid, and running it until it seized.

If you still happen to run across a car in a pnp with C4C written on it don't expect to get any good internal engine parts.

I used to live on LI, there is plenty of high ground. The reality is that the NWS and TWC have cried "wolf" so many times that people ignored the warnings of this storm even though it was the real deal. Additionally, hurricanes do not normally make the left turn toward NJ as this one did, they normally continue north to LI.

Many areas on the south shore have very little elevation and were a disaster waiting to happen.

The storm surge was 11 feet. Most of Long Island, other than the areas in very close proximity to the water, is above 11 feet.

All they had to do was to drive about two miles from the water.

Lots of high ground north of the southern tip of Manhattan.

Must have been a heck of a year for the towing and auto transport companies in the area. That front-end loader operator, arranging the cars in one of the pics, certainly had the weirdest gig of his career.

I find the 15,000 number hard to deal with, even seeing those pics and having read stories like the scumbag parking garage operator who moved his monthly parkers from their safe spots upstairs, down to the lower levels so he could gouge walk-ins to put their cars up top.

Just one side note from the article.....

Some worry that the deal is a case of short-term gain, long-term pain because, environmentalists said, the thousands of vehicles that will be on site for six to 12 months could leak oil, gasoline and other chemicals into the groundwater.

Aw for **** sake What do these environmentalists think those F-14s and other jets that used the airfield for DECADES ran on? Pixie dust?
