Who has the best current Doppler radar and satellite pictures of this?

John Stewart. Seems that's where everyone is getting their news these days. ;)

Little late for that, for me. My house is sitting across the street from the ocean and we are getting the beginning of this storm just south of AC, NJ. Winds are 25, gusting 40, but this will worsen. Getting water in several doors with the driving winds, dispite sandbagging.

Mercedes are fast asleep in the garage. We are located on one of the highest point on the island, so we are all deep in it, if I get floodwaters.

Hope this passes quickly & safely.

Let's just hope Snookie stayed out on the beach and got washed away...

I get to keep this on topic, we should start a game of who can post stills/video from news coverage of MB diesels in the storm.

Here's a great source of un-hyped coverage. Official NHC maps, sgaghetti, and a forum made up of a lot interested folks like us ( but mets).

"Google" NHC,Go There.

Then look at left hand choices.
Second category Down is "Get Storm Info" ,underneath it Click on "Satellite".
Then scroll down. A Plethora of Choices.

30 minute updates.

I like the "IR Funktop" "Flash" imagery [Movin Color Pictures!]

I agree with that !!! What a waste of time.

At the Jersey (Southern) Shore this hurricane was a powerful wind & rain event. No power outages (no trees) no flooding at the beach, the back bays will be very different however.
No damage sustained, Very lucky at this point. Still raining slightly.
Time to clean up, check friends boats.

New FEMA Alert!

THIS JUST IN* As Hurricane Irene prepares to batter the East Coast, federal disaster officials warn that Internet outages could force people to interact with other people for the first time in years. Residents are bracing themselves for the horror of awkward silences and unwanted eye contact. FEMA has advised: “Be prepared. Write down possible topics to talk about in advance. Remember, a conversation is basically a series of Facebook updates strung together".

Took the Benz to NOVA, so it was safe. Luckily no damage here, just branches down all over. Now for the massive cleanup.

How did you make out in SE CT, Tom? Not much here in central CT but still lots of power outages.

We lucked out here.... never lost power, although 2/3 of the town did lose it. If you look at the CL&P power outage map, SE CT got slammed. lots of flooding also.

I am at work in Groton now, and we got power back last night, and cable Internet came back about an hour ago. Much better than we expected, so far.

Lots of people still out, however.

Post-Irene on Hatteras Island

Well, we survived...

Here on the island, it was a wind event, more than anything. Lots of blown-down trees & limbs. Some flood damage on the northern section of the island. For those that don't know, Hatteras Island is shaped like a backwards "L". Those that live in the upper part of that "L" got slammed pretty good with soundside flooding & there is still a lot of water on the highway.

The island was breached (read "cut through") in three places on the north end of that "L". It took out the only road off the island. It'll probably take two to four weeks to repair that so we can get off the island. Right now we are all stranded out here, but there is a special ferry running supplies & emergency workers over - but no other people.

We just got power out here late last night, on emergency generators. Landline service was restored late Sunday, but cell service is still out & probably will be for a while. Email/internet is the only communications we have out here, other than those that have a landline phone.

Well, we'll all get through this eventually. I hope that my fellow Benz owners north of here made it OK. Benz owners out here faired well & took good care of their vehicles.

More later...
