FM100 5 micron before secondary filter?
Will there be flow problems if I mount my filtration setup as follows:
Prefilter------->FM100 5 Micron------->Secondary Filter Or should I go no smaller than the 30 micron FM100? Thanks! |

You have TWO FM100's and a stock primary and a stock secondary!?
Nice! I thought I was obsessive! Longevity is my goal here, do you have water separators on both? |

No trunk mounted 30 micron is a Goldenrod water block.Under the hood is where the FM100 is located.I run two extra filters when runing diesel and other fuels.My 30 micron traps most of the crap in oils.WMO,WATF,WVO,and diesel.

On the 80 240D I have the Racor 200FG with a 2 micron filter with no pre filter. this filter is the pre filter and a water seperator.
I have been using this same one on my Datsun Diesel for the past 28 yrs. you will not have any problems using a 2 micron filter and the lift pump has plenty of oomph to flatten a fuel tank when the vent is plugged. What happens when a tank vent gets clogged. Charlie

You will have no issues with what you suggest. However, the secondary Spin-on will just be along for the ride as it is a 10 nominal mircon Filter.
I made an adapter and replaced my Stock Spin-on Secondary Filter with a 2 absolute micron CAT 1R-0750 Fuel Filter. I also have a CAT water separator that I will install before the Plastic Primary Filter someday. But, I was supprised to find it has a Screen in it like the Fuel Tank Screen; but larger. They yellow arrow is there from another post showing that I repaced the Plastic Tubing with 1/4" Fuel Hose.

I've seen other adaptors similar but you end up making a new banjo bolt for the filter... does that cat filter have the same threads as the stock mercedes one?

The 200FG is an older one, probably no longer available. the replacement filter element is the 2000SM, about $13 at West Marine. unscrew the top band, lift out the top, pull off the filter from the nipple, slip on the new one.
has a drain in the bottom of the large clear plastic bowel. there is the 2 micron and a 10 micron, and maybe one more. I have seen 3 at the PNP`s. there was one I think in the Columbia yard in Portland last month, on an old Chevy Diesel truck. I pulled one off a 300SD a couple yrs ago. Here is the only one I could find on E-bay. It is upside down in the picture, and new in the box. Charlie

I do not remember the exact details; all that is in the thread below. The Central Filter Bolt is 14mmxsomething and the Cat Filter is threaded for 1"x14 threads pre inch (I think). That along with the outside diameter of the CAT Filter make it possible just to make an adapter. Also if for some reason you have to go back to the Stock Filter you just remove the Adapter. There cannot be a fine filter before the lift pump.

I think what is being said here is its unwise to have a fine filter before the lift pump.
I have experienced on a GM diesel, a collapsed filter element because it plugged. The driver had left the fuel cap off & dust got into the fuel. It took about 2 hours running for it to happen. Your finest filter should be just before the IP/high press pump. If you have a fine filter first & the other filters get dirty, its a sign that the fine filter has failed & not just plugged.

Also I am in no physical shape right now to make anything. So look in my Thread and get a 1"x14 threads per inch Bolt or Allthreaded Rod (the rod is most often softer than a Bolt is) and have someone drill a hole down the center (best done on a lathe) and tap it out for the 14mm threads that are on the Filter Central Bolt. Cut it to the length you want and you have an adapter. You will need to make a little Plate to move the whole Filter Housing to the rear about an inch or so due to a casting under the Stock Filter. But that is just drilling holes in a piece of flat metal. No big deal.
