126 plastic slides break why
I'm putting the 85SD back together after paint and want everything working. Both the passenger side front and rear window regulators have broken plastic slides. I think they have been replaced before and I have new parts on hand.
Question is why might they have broken? 2nd question is what to lube them with? I have a little MB sunroof paste left but the system shouldn't be so sensitive that only that paste will work. Any lube will attract dirt but I was thinking something like SylGlide which I also have on hand.

It's a really crappy design. The slide has to not only give lifting force, but also sliding force while suspending the whole window. Compounding the issue is brittle plastic with a rubber center. Just all around a CRAP design.
Clean out all the old grease and lube the track and slider liberally with sunroof grease or silicone grease (such as Syl-Glide). Make sure the window isn't binding in the guides, if it is, adjust the rear guide so the window moves smoothly. I used to make a repair kit using UHMW plastic as a permanent solution for these stupid glides, but apparently most of the forum members thought that $15 shipped for a set of 2 hand-made parts was an overvaluation for my time, effort, and materials. I have sets in at least a dozen cars I know of (including all the W126es I've owned) with zero reports of broken slides, stuck windows, or bent/jammed regulators. Just be aware that even using OE parts, they WILL break again, sooner rather than later.

If kept greased up they don't regularly fail.....of all the vehicles my family has owned only two of five window mechanism failures were the little slide piece. The others were motor, or on my W126, the whole assembly cracked apart. I welded it back together. Grinder and paint make me the welder I aint! (drove it 4+ years that way, worked great )

I replaced the plastic on the 2 rear windows. Only 1 more on the front to take care of. It must have been a while because I had to figure it our=t again. Amazing how much faster the 2nd goes.
Bench grinder removes the old. Bolt head mounted in the vice gives something to smack against to peen the replacement into place. BFH gets the new one set like it is supposed to. On another note, a friend gave me an old water bed. I have one and don't want to take a chance on this one leaking but I do need some new vapor barriers.
