is.600 miles per.tank possible ? 83 300D

Whats the.most miles per.tank you see all interstate driving at 70/75 mph.

Also.what.about city.not much traffic.i.see thanks

These.cars.have a.21.1 gal tank

Skippy 10-17-2011 09:47 PM

Possible? I think so. Advisable? Not so much. I usually fill up when I get down to about a quarter tank indicated. This is generally a bit over 400 miles for me. Assuming 30 mpg, which is doable with a light foot under the right conditions, you would have to burn 20 of your nominal 21 gallons. This is cutting it closer than I like, especially since most people get less than 30 mpg most of the time.

partsman225 10-17-2011 09:55 PM

I got a.mans car.im working on rigbt now.claims.to get.31 mpg all highway hes got.a.84.300TDWagon..tank hold.less.that 20 gals iam sure.

Skippy 10-17-2011 09:58 PM

There are people on here who will probably say that's impossible, but I think it is, provided he drives like somebody's grandfather. I have broken 30 mpg before, but that is with my manual conversion. I picked up about 3 mpg overall with the swap.

fruitcakesa 10-17-2011 10:07 PM

My best in the 81 4 speed was 31.5
Averages closer to 27-29

vstech 10-17-2011 10:12 PM

POSSIBLE? yes. with an automatic, with average driving highway conditions... not likely.
my 83TD wagon has about a 16gallon tank...
my 82SD has the 21ish gallon tank, and I'd not recommend over 500miles on that much more aerodynamic vehicle...

partsman225 10-17-2011 10:13 PM

Thanks for.the.input
i will.have.my results.whan i get car.rode.ready in a weeki drive.Appx.28miles.round.tripa.dayso i.will know in about.30 days or less. No traffic.at.5am in the morning.but get some.on the.way home

Biodiesel300TD 10-17-2011 10:49 PM

I'm cheating a little but I drove 1350.8 miles on 12 gallons of diesel a couple years ago!:D:P Logged me 112mpg! The best I had was 173mpg. I'm actually about to pull the veg system so this will be the first time I really get to see what kind of mileage the 240D gets.

My 82 wagon never got more than 360 miles to a tank. I was getting 26mpg, only pushed the tank real low a handful of times.

diametricalbenz 10-18-2011 02:44 PM

I could never do better than 26.3mpg when driving the 5 freeway stretch between LA and SFO numerous times in an 82 300TD. The tank was filled to the brim angled down and burped and the mileage was verified by the GPS. The maximum speed was 65-68mph while on cruise control.

t walgamuth 10-18-2011 04:34 PM

In my 83 240d with the 300d euro motor, 307 diff and five speed overdrive tranny I can get 35 with ease. With the 23 gallon turbodiesel tank I can exceed 750 miles on a tank with no sweat.;)

martureo 10-18-2011 04:54 PM

My 84 300D with untouched ALDA (boost management) and deleted EGR has never had over 29.6mpg. I average around 26mpg with a fair amount of parking lot highway traffic.

I think the most I ever got out of a tank was about 475 miles and that was when I was wide-eyed and worried that I wouldn't find a gas station in while driving in the middle of nowhere. I usually fill up around 425 miles.

Zacharias 10-18-2011 05:19 PM

My best was on a relatively flat day of steady driving on a highway trip in my 1979 300sd: 30.5 mpg (but those were Imperial gallons).

I don't think I ever got within 4 mpg of that again.

My current '85 300d seems to give me just a hair under 27 most of the time, in a mix of urban and secondary-highway use.

Thats pretty good, The best I got with my 85, 5 spd Euro wagon was 34.5. Its never under 30 tho. Its a sweet ride:P

My 83 300DT goes 510 miles on VO before the reserve light comes on which means there's at least 2.5 gallons left. That's not quite 600 miles/ tank but close.

I actually drained my tank (83 300DT) when the reserve light came on and 2.5 gallons came out.

charmalu 10-19-2011 01:02 PM

Our 240 holds 17 gallons, and between Lathrope, Ca and Cottage Grove, Or.
We went 524 miles and added 16 gallons.

Iam looking for a 300D fuel tank, and think I could stretch it all the way to Portland, about another 125 miles.

I have the 3:58 Diff which helps some compared to the 3:69.

The 85 300D I have an extra 12 gallon aluminum tank that sits against the main tank. we fueled In Lathrope and drove to Salt Lake City, Ut. then up to Ogden and fueled there. don`t remember the milage or how much fuel used. that was back in 04 or 05. that was when it still had the automatic. now with the 4-spd should do better.

How about putting your car on someone's flat bed?

A tow rope?

mike-81-240d 10-30-2011 03:17 PM

I get 18mpg. 400 miles tops, normally about 340.

ngarover 10-30-2011 05:07 PM

IF the tank is 21.1 gallons as my owners manual says, and I'm getting 31.5-31.7 mpg (which I am) then that calculates out to 664.65 miles from totally full to bone dry. I've never ran it down past the 1/4th mark but was over 430 miles at that point.

partsman225 10-30-2011 05:24 PM

All topped off and ready to go this tank full.....bring along 2Gal can cause i dont know my fuel.gauge on thos car yet.
Also going to gps the miles too.
And withh.all gps data giving.wish me.luck on getting 600 Miles

diametricalbenz 10-30-2011 05:50 PM

I am interested to know if you can average 600 miles over 5 or more full fill ups.

partsman225 10-30-2011 08:27 PM

Filled to the.neck trip trip reset to 0. Plus.gps.wil confirm all data
will turn on everytime.before i start moving.
It.will have.top.speed.
Moving avg.stopped time.and all that good stuff.

I only.drive at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.im trying to get the best i can get.
This willalso be.all city miles on this tank full...then will do highway trip after.this.tankfull

KarTek 10-30-2011 08:58 PM

The secret is to buy something with an OM606 in it. I get pretty consistent 33+ on the highway with a peak of 37 one time. 21+ gallon tank, 20+ usable.

Brian Carlton 12-14-2011 08:25 PM

The SD has a repaired odometer and it's accurate to .1%.

The last two tanks:

523 miles on 18.0 gallons

550 miles on 17.31 gallons

Both were refilled right to the cap.

I might have a chance if we didn't switch to winter fuel...........which I'm sure is now in the tank, as of today.

The key to this economy is to hold the highway speed to 62 mph. I lose about three minutes, maximum, in my typical 50 mile trip.

partsman225 12-25-2011 01:59 AM

Right now.i got 23.mpg.thats.appx 350 mile and took only 14.7 gals.i think i can get 520.easy on a tank will try again soon.with.different driving habits with alda turned in half.more turn

tomas_maly 12-25-2011 11:56 PM

What exactly does a 'reserve tank' mean? Does the fuel not get used unless you somehow hook up to it or enable it? I'm reading my 300TD has a 16 gallon tank + 2 gallon reserve, or something.

Yoy dont have to do anything when the gauge and sender is work right when the.rev light comes.on yoy got that many gals.left..not.sure on ur wagon check ur book

my 91 560 sel my gauge is not right so when my rev light came on i drained all the.fuel out and have 2.5 gals just what my rev is.when my light comes on it flickers goes.to a.quarter then E. Its not the sedong unit nor.the.gauge unit .so i live by the.light
12.5.city
17.5 hiway.
In city i get 280miles max on a tank and puttingappx 23.0 gals in it ..onlt .5 gals.till out that time.

tomas_maly 12-26-2011 11:27 AM

hmmmm, my fuel light actually turns on at an absurd point like when there are 4-6 gallons left. The total capacity is 16gal I think, on my wagon. Sometimes the light flickers randomly when I have most of a tank full.

piccolovic 12-27-2011 04:01 PM

Yes, it is possible to get 600 miles on a tankful of diesel . . . if you install a 25 to 30 gal tank, or add an aux tank!!!! I usually get nervous looking at the gauge when it's lower than 1/4 tank, as it seems to use go down faster on the lower part of the gauge, and I usually put twelve gals. in at around 340 + miles (during long trips). If you want that kind of capacity, you may wish to check with other forum members of good tanks/gauges to insure that fuel capacity you want. my '83 300D only averages about 26-28 mpg on highway, keeping it at 65, without the A/C. I instantly lose 2 mpg for kicking on the compressor, or driving over 65. If going 70-75 mph, with the A/C, I'll average 24 mpg for the trip, all highway miles. That is on my taxi-model '83 300D (no-frills, manual seats). I'm told the same year model can get up to 31 mpg in the SD model because it's better on the aerodynamics of the body design, even though it has the exact same drivetrain (just slighly longer drive-line).

irishflyer 12-28-2011 06:28 AM

I assume you are trying to save diesel, so let's put in some perspective. I operate a semi with a Detroit Diesel 60 series. To run for two days at 6mpg (open top box trailer, aerodynamics akin to a grand piano limits me) I burn about 150 gallons, about $550 or so. Point is, I wouldn't risk running out over a few bucks, and if you live 600 miles between stations, carry 5 gal. Good job if you can get 30mpg!

Read 'em and weep:

550 miles on 17.311g

This is a bit higher than normal..........she's been doing 550 miles with 18 gallons routinely.

It makes me question whether they actually changed to winter fuel. Never in the last 10 years have I done better than about 25 in the winter.

MBeige 02-07-2012 12:12 AM

I've pushed my 300D up to around 520 miles and 20 gallons (26mpg) on its standard 21.1 gallon fuel tank. This was a mix of city and highway driving, little to no AC use, to and from work (~40 miles daily), and when I really feathered the accelerator and attempted to get the best combined city/highway mileage I could get. Normally I get around 450 miles to ~ 18 gallons which equates to 25mpg.

Remember, a W126 will have a 25 gallon tank, a W123 sedan and coupe will have a 21.1 gallon metal tank and a smaller plastic tank (240D's have the plastic tanks), a W123 wagon will have an 18.5 gallon tank, a W201 will have a 14.5 gallon tank or the larger 18 gallon (70L) tank.

You won't find any 617 powered W126's with a 25 gallon tank. 600 miles would be easy in that case..........but, it doesn't exist.

Really? I thought they had the 25 gallon tanks. What size were their fuel tanks (300SD w126)? I know it's bigger than the W123's which is 21.1 gal.

Cannot recall the precise value, but it's very close to 21 gallons as well.

I've never been able to put 20 gallons in this one. It will start to suck air through the pickup screen at about 19.5............find diesel fuel...........fast.

I hear ya. Last time I pushed it, the car started sputtering and I was just about to pull in to fill up

I'm guessing maybe 23 gallons for the SD...?

When I refuel and fill up the whole tank, my 300D sits slightly lower in the back. And when it's nearly empty, the back sits way up than when it was full.

The SD definitely holds around 20.5 gallons..........not more.

The weight, approx. 150 lb., directly on the rear axle, also lowers the SD by about 1". It sits just slightly lower then level with full fuel and about 100 lb. in the trunk.

My 91.560.sel has.a.23.5.gal. Tank wirh.res.

I can't help re: 300D fuel economy, but I wonder if perhaps tire pressure is more of a factor in winter than the diesel blend?

Given that you lose a few psi due to contraction in colder temps, I'm inclined to think this will play a pretty significant role in lowering winter mpg figures.

Good point.

I bump up my tire pressures when the cold weather sets in. I see a lot of other cars running on tires with low pressure (sidewall collapsed in varying stages) driving around when it gets cold out.

JHZR2 02-07-2012 03:50 PM

OEM spec from MB is 33 MPG highway per MB documentation openly available.

No ethanol imposed on diesel, so no mileage loss besides out of spec, 30yo stuff.

Whether anyone ever got that is another story.

But I have gotten well over 500 miles in a tank in a w123, but not 600.

Ill bet economic point on this kind of a body style is 35-55 MPH.

Brian Carlton 03-22-2012 06:46 PM

close..........

How about 594 miles with plenty to spare:
