1985 300d running rough

Lately, my 300d has been running rough and I've experienced a loss in power. Basically, it will sart right up, but idles like the motor's shaking. I can see the hood vibrating. It runs a little better at higher rpms. I was thinking it might a bad injector, but wasn't sure. This is my first diesel MB, so I'm a little green. Any thoughts, or input. Would be appreciated.

Some basic questions:

Did this happen suddenly or did the car gradually run worse over days or weeks? (If sudden, was it following a fillup?)

Have you recently run any cleaner or additive through the fuel system?

When were the fuel filters last changed? And the air filter?

First, check your engine mounts. Replace all filters, including the one in the tank. (Never hurts to have fresh ones anyways) Then try a good diesel purge to clean the injectors. If still bad, check the valves clearances and while your at it test the timing chain stretch and correct both.

Sounds like a lot but in reality your looking at a a couple hours work total to do everything.

What they said plus a valve adjustment which is paramount to a smooth running engine.

OK, all above great advice.
WELCOME to the forum, we'll have you totally comfortable working on nearly anything on your car. there is a section at the top right side of the page marked resources, there are lots of DIY instructions for many many repairs on this car!
I'd reverse the fuel lines from supply to return to blow our your tank screen, then replace the fuel filters, both primary (clear little filter) and secondary (metal spin on filter behind power steering pump) then pull the valve cover and adjust the valves, then prime the fuel system until fuel is full in the spin on.
then I'd fill the tank, and drive it until it's low, and add biocide or Startron tank cleaner to remove any bacteria or fungus from the tank!
